Scott is the AD. He and Dan built something great at MSU. If UF doesn't hire Dan then it will be because he is happy where he is. Maybe he wants to go the Frank Beamer/Bill Schneider/Gary Patterson route as opposed to the Jim McElwain/Butch Jones route.

There is something of value to be said about coaches wanting to create a legacy as oppossed to adding to one. Dan is a fairly ego driven individual. He is literally the biggest name in Mississippi State football history and part of me, in the most realistic way, believes that he wants to look back at his life and show what he built rather than enter a situation where he only may match the accolades of former coaches...ie spurrier, meyer. Dan has already won 2 national championships so I don't think that is really a huge factor in his hiring expectations.

I don't buy it. It's been reported that his representation reached out to Oregon and LSU when those jobs were open--he's got a nice set up at State, but he's been there for a while and might want a new challenge.

McElwain got canned, in large part, because he was abrasive and didn't play well with others. This is the same reason Mullen never got a look the last two times the UF job came open.

well, Dan wanted the job a few years ago when Jim got it. And he wanted PSU when Franklin got it.

Mullen may well have come to love Starkville and decided that he wants to live there forever in a world where 10-2 is the ceiling and he will be the greatest coach in program history if he can just average 8+ wins.

Or, he may still have some professional ambition left and he might think that Florida being the better program with more resources and playing in the East gives him a better chance to make it to Atlanta and maybe the CFB playoff.

I'm sure Dan is on their top 3 list, but they may want to go another route. I can see how UF not hiring him will be viewed by MSU fans as "Dan loves us and just prefers it here" though.

Pretty easy to tell, just watch State's recruiting efforts. Recruiting basically stopped after the 2015 season because Mullen thought he was getting the Miami job until UGA fired Richt. Ended up missing out on 2 top 100 kids in his backyard because of that. If recruiting comes to a crawl, then he's gone (or at least thinks he is) and if not, then he's staying.

How fickle are the fans in Starkville? He could be a lifer. Fans shed a tear when he finally retires sort of thing.

Or they dump him at the next 4-8 season.

Florida will do better than Dan. They’ll get Frost or Kelly. Probably their choice between the two.

If he’s offered the UF job, he’s taking it.

I think UF has Frost at the top of their list. Mullen might be a target at UT and ATM (this year or next) and Mullen might have more interest in those jobs than UF.

No one in their right mind would choose to live and work in the state of Mississippi over Florida. :p

The only was Mullen is even considered is if Stricklin sticks his neck out for him. Mullen’s personality is to much like Macs that’s why he is still in Starkville . This idea that he will not leave is down right funny . The guys name has been put out there and been rumored to interview for jobs in recent years . Either he doesn’t like it their as much as the fans think or he likes money more then he likes coaching at State. If he leav s State it will likely be for s job out side of the SEC.

I believe that Mullen really does love State and Starkvegas, but he is also a competitor. With his recruiting chops, defense, and QB development, he could probably accomplish some really impressive things at a school like UF. State is never going to have that kind of pull.

The reasons Mullen might not take it have already been covered.

I would say everything you said above is true as long as you switched out "UF" with "Anyone". UF might want Frost or Kelly more and get them. Strickland's relationship with Mullen hurts him perception wise because it would appear he didn't know anyone or did a half-arse search if Mullen were to not succeed. UT and UCLA will come after Mullen too and if he stays you are right, he chose to retire at MSU. And that would halfway be believable if he didn't just hire Jimmy Sexton.

It comes down to does Mullen want to retire at State or not. If he doesn't then he jumps because it will be hard to replicate the combination of open jobs and hot name he has going for him right now. It wont be about money. It will simply be does he want to retire in Starkville. He's got it pretty good there and had he not hired Sexton, I would believe State has a good shot at holding on to him.
