I'll be honest, when he was pressed into service, I thought we'd see a dropoff. Not so. Dude is solid and ALWAYS around the football. He's just one of those guys that knows how to play the game. He is an awesome player that plays his position well and probably directs traffic out there to boot.

Son of George can correct me if I'm wrong but isn't he one of the highest rated LBers in the SEC by PFF?
Posted on 9/20/17 at 9:34 pm to TizzyT4theUofA
He's the 2nd highest graded LB in the SEC per PFF.
Levi Wallace is the highest graded CB in the SEC too. Not bad for 2 guys who started the season as reserves...

I am proud of Levi for this stat, but the troubling thing to me is this means our CB evaluations coming out of high school are fricking terrible.

Na, it doesn't mean that.

No, it means Wallace has developed over his time at Alabama - which should be considered a good thing.
I don't think anybody recruited Wallace. I read a story where he didn't even have a rating by the recruiting services.

If Wallace is starting over our 4-star recruits, who aren't even getting snaps in trash time, then our evaluations are crap.
We've passed on a lot of good CB talent in the last 3 years because they "didn't fit our system."
ETA: This isn't a knock on Wallace. He's been awesome.

Again, that is just wrong. Sometimes guys develop better.
Rashad Johnson and Javier Arenas are two recent examples of guys who few or in Johnson's case literally NOBODY wanted yet developed in college and went on to play in the league.
You gonna say our evaluations are crap because Johnson and Arenas were starting over start recruits? If Bama wasn't consistently putting DBs on all SEC teams and in the NFL you'd be able to make a point, but that isn't the case. We simply got lucky that a kid from Arizona loved Alabama enough to come clear across the country to live a dream and turned out to also be a really good football player.

Five years of experience can often trump slightly more talent. It's not like Levi is slow or unathletic.
As far as Holcombe, he really hasn't stood out to me as being particularly good, or particularly bad. So, I'd say he's doing fairly well.

For one, when Johnson and Arenas joined and played for the team we didn't have star recruits at the CB position. Dre Kirkpatrick was the first star defensive back we signed under Saban and Johnson was already gone and Arenas was a Senior during Dre's Freshman year.

The only guys we have making All-SEC teams have been the 5-stars. Our mid-level evaluations have been crap.
Here are the guys we've signed since 2009 at corner that weren't 5-stars:
John Fulton
DeQuan Menzie
Deion Belue x2
Bradley Sylve
Geno Smith
Travell Dixon
Maurice Smith
Jonathan Cook
Nigel Knott
Shyheim Carter
Jared Mayden
Aaron Robinson
Then you have the 5-stars that didn't pan out in BJ Scott, Kendall Sheffield and Tony Brown (somewhat).
Another sad thing is guys we have recruited to play WR, who didn't work out at that position, have performed better in the secondary like Cyrus Jones and Anthony Averitt.
The point is there have been some really good players we've passed on because they didn't fit our system. As the list above shows, neither did the ones we signed apparently.

If you want to say you think something's wrong with our recruiting because we pass on highly rated defensive backs simply because they don't fit the staff's metrics, that's fine.
What I take issue with is the assertion that Levi Wallace is playing for that reason. Levi Wallace is playing because he's a damned good football player.
Let me ask you this question. Is there a secondary in the SEC where, based on what we've seen thus far, Wallace wouldn't be playing a ton of snaps if not starting?

That's not what I'm implying at all. He's been our best defensive back this season.

That's exactly what I'm saying. My comments are more of a condemnation towards the guys we've taken who haven't panned out for whatever reason not a knock on Wallace. It's also a jab at passing on guys who aren't physically built a certain way even though their on the field production is off the charts.

Probably not. Like I said, he's been awesome.

It's not like he had a bunch of other offers. Kid was raw, came in, developed and eventually got a shot.

Kareem Jackson was a mid-level recruit. He was a 3 star on some sites.
