triple option

Not as worried being season opener.

I don't see them going full bore quick (or as fast as later on) and it's going to be their 1st game as well. A couple games and more polished up it would probably be harder with the different looks. After the scripted plays, isn't the triple option much slower and more easy to wrap head round (than right out of the gate hurry up)?

I'm not worried about the outcome but like some others have said injuries could hurt us down the road. They do cut block a lot and that in itself worries me a little.

have a month to prep for the triple option, not 3 days mid-week. If Steele and co can get it together in a month, he would be given his walking papers

Id be shocked and a little disappointed if we have spent even more than a day practicing for a team we should easily out talent.

Just thinking of the Clemson game last year and the odd approach Gus came up with

I swear to God if Gus tries to rotate 5 QB's and does the whirly bird I might shoot my freaking TV

Based on the way Gus historically calls games, his tendency is going to be (as another poster already pointed out) to play vanilla against Georgia Southern.

If he was doing that just to knock the rust off, that would be one thing. But my belief is that Gus thinks he is better off "hiding" a lot of things from Clemson in game 2. To me, that benefit is much outweighed by going with a more aggressive game plan in game 1 and getting all his many playmakers the reps they need to be bad-arse all season.

I say release the hounds. Let us see our enemies driven before us and hear the lamentations of their women.

That is dumb because the scheme they run is designed to help equalize being out-talented. Also it is not smart to have some practice time against the cut blocks to know how to protect youself.

Gus can be baffling in that regard. Sometimes he's clearly vanilla, and then sometimes, he'll run trick plays when we are beating the brakes off folks - see Arky State last year. I prefer the Arky State approach honestly - lets destroy the cupcakes while making the power5 opponents have to spend time preparing for everything in our arsenal.

this isn't the same Georgia Southern that beat Florida or gave Georgia and Ole Miss scares . but that triple option could seriously give our D fits during the game

Georgia Southern shouldn't be trouble, but it's college football, it's the first game, the triple option is geared to equalize talent gaps, and we cheer for one of the strangest teams in all the land headed by an alchemist instead of a head coach.

I'm saying no one should be surprised when we only win by 3-7 and go on to beat the brakes off Clemson the next week en route to the SEC championship. It's Auburn football, y'all.

Only worried about D-linemen getting hurt with all the chop blocking that will be going on.

Last year's team was a "Gun-Option" offense which I don't think uses cut blocks. They hired the QB coach from GTech but it looks like they will still use the "Gun-Option".

quote:

January 9 2017
When Cook was hired, many speculated the Eagles would return to the flexbone offense run by former Georgia Southern and current Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson. Both Summers and Cook said Monday the flexbone will only be a small part of the scheme to throw opponents off balance.

“We still intend to be a gun-option team,” Summers said. “We’ll certainly incorporate pieces of the flexbone. In a perfect world, we’d probably be somewhere in between 70-30, 75-25 percent gun option to under center. We want to run the ball as our emphasis, but we still want to be able to throw it. We’d like to throw it around 15 times a game.”

Summers and his staff just have to get to that perfect world. After losing 22 seniors, including their top two quarterbacks, top running back and top two receivers, the Eagles will have to nail another recruiting class and get returning players up to speed. “I think as we move into this first year, we’re going to try to find a scheme that fits the personnel we have in place,” Summers said. “As we move forward, we’re going to build and adapt and be more focused on the individuals that fit the scheme we want to be.”

This game should be a good game to prepare for Clemson's Kelly Bryant, and his RPO game.

Frankly, if our defense has trouble against GA Southern I will be pretty surprised, and not in a good way.

Still doubt we beat the 35-pt spread, as I imagine we'll keep it pretty vanilla on offense. But I don't expect another Jax State fiasco.
