Consistent Greatness in SEC Running Backs.

The running back position is one that has great difficulty in the SEC due to the strength and power of the defenses. It's hard for a running back to have consistent performance and avoid injuries. Very few running backs in the history of the league have had the talent, durability and work ethic to hit 1,000 in three seasons. In Fact, only 4 Running backs in the long and storied history of the league have been good enough and strong enough to manage this feat:
1. Herschel Walker: He ran for over 1,000 yards in all three of his seasons. He ran for over 1,600 yards in all three of his seasons in fact.
2. Darren McFadden: Darren is one of only three running backs in SEC history to rush for over 1,000 yards in every single season they played in the league. His career rushing total is second only to Herschel's. His three year total is more than 600 yards higher than the next 3 year back, Emmitt Smith.
3. Kevin Faulk: Kevin is third in career rushing in the SEC and rushed for over 1,000 yards in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.
4. Alex Collins: Alex rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his three seasons, showing heart and durability that hasn't been replicated since.
That's it. Those are the only 4 backs in SEC history to have 3 1,000 yard rushing seasons. Other backs were simply not good enough to manage that feat in college.
Emmitt Smith came very close, but only managed 988 yards in his 9 game sophomore season.
Nick Chubb has a chance to join this elite group this season. He ran for over 1,000 yards in his freshman and junior seasons. He ran for 747 yards in his injury shortened sophomore season. By making it through this year with over 1,000 yards he can show his durability, consistency and heart. He would be only the fifth member of this elite group.
I wish Chubb good luck and hopefully he can join this group.

If Fournette wouldn't have gotten hurt last year, he would be on that list also. Unfortunately, he started playing too soon and never fully healed.

Leonard Fournette stubbed his vagina.
Also, Emmitt was mentioned, he didn't fricking qualify.

And we now see the real reason this thread was created. This had potential but you just got a little too antsy.

Fournette wasn't good enough, man. Not only was he injury prone, but he was absent against any team with a good defense.

So according to this logic Ken Darby is a better RB than any recent Alabama RB because he nearly eclipsed 1000 yards for a third consecutive season in 2006?
Had he not been injury plagued that season he's better than Shaun Alexander, Mark Ingram, Eddie Lacy, or Derrick Henry?
2004 1062 yards
2005 1242 yards
2006 835 yards

Anthony Dixon at MState was close
668 yards 2006
1,066 yards 2007
869 yards 2008
1,391 yards 2009
If we would have had a decent team in 2008, he would gone over 1K that year. But we were 4-8 and just not very good.
He ended up with 3,994 yards total which I think is in the top ten of the SEC all-time.
I would put him right behind the top tier RB's.

Darby is an example of why it's a GOOD metric.
He redshirted, plus played 4 fricking years and couldn't do it. He didn't even miss a game in his senior season but couldn't crack 1,000 yards.
If you can't rush for 1,000 yards 3 times in 5 years, well, you're obviously not a great, consistent or durable back.

Darby was injured his entire senior season. He should have never been playing. Another Shula mishap with injured players.

Barry Sanders only rushed for 1,000 yards once in three years and is the one of, if not the, greatest running backs of all time.
Nice fail.

He clearly wasn't the best collegiate back of all time.

Alex Collins was clearly better.

Herschel Walker has over 13,000 yards from scrimmage in the NFL. That doesn't include all his amazing totals from before his time in the NFL.
Darren McFadden has over 7,500 yards from scrimmage in the NFL and is still active.
Kevin Faulk had 7,300 yards from scrimmage in the NFL
Alex Collins has only 200 yards from scrimmage, but half of that was in the final 2 games of last season and it was his rookie year.
Compare that to the people who ranked 4-7 on the career rushing yards in the SEC (walker, mcfadden, faulk were 1-3 and collins, the outlier at 13.)
4. Bo Jackson: 3,000 career yards from scrimmage in the NFL
5. Errict Rhett: 4,600 career yards from scrimmage in the NFL
6. Dalton Hilliard: almost 6,400 career yards from scrimmage in the NFL
7. Charles Alexander: almost 3,800 career yards from scrimmage in the NFL.
So, in fact, they do a lot better in the NFL than people behind them on the career rushing list. Almost like they're more durable :) Yes, Collins is currently the exception.. but he's kind of an outlier anyway.

By the numbers he sure was. Not even close.

Barry Sanders backed up a future hall of fame Running back at Oklahoma State.
It's a fair point though, perhaps we should expand the metric to include 1,000 yard seasons in the first 4 or 5 years of play, college and NFL? Barry after all did rush for over 1,000 3 times in that metric. Emmitt Smith did as well.
