I can hear it now...if TN wins their fan base will declare themselves, SEC East Champs, and Playoff bound. Do any of y'all recall the hysteria last year after their first couple of wins?

When they started the season 5-0 with wins over ACC runner up Virginia Tech, Florida, And Georgia prior to being absolutely decimated by injuries?
It was the best start for UT in quite some time. Surely you understand why the fanbase was extremely positive.

The draft was great, and I'm very excited by the momentum it should provide on the recruiting trail, especially in-state. I'm just not sure how much progress our players made. Sure, Dobbs got better, but was that his personal work ethic or the program? Barnett put up around 10 sacks every season. No one took significant strides that struck me as serious development from coaches. Just my perspective. What will guys like Kongbo do? He has so much raw ability but needs to be developed. I hope that the coaching staff can do it, but I just don't have that confidence.

This year will set up for Butch to be fired mid-season and Phat Phil to take over the rest of the year.

Na, man. It's just because we are delusional as a fan base. None of those wins ever meant anything. VOLS should have been more realistic after that 5-0 start. At least now we know better.

I hate this game. We'll have some injuries because of the fig chop blocks.
This game means nothing, unless we lose.

It's also hard to gauge the development of players regarding last season when just about every player that we had was injured at some point in time. I'm not disagreeing with you on some of the question marks you have, but last year was the biggest disaster from a personnel injury stand point over any season in my lifetime.
I have never seen anything like what happened to us last year. It was miserable.
Josh Malone absolutely got better and better every year. He's one of the few role players who remained healthy besides Dobbs and Barnett last year. All 3 had terrific seasons.

Am I crazy to think that Georgia Tech wins by double digits in this one?
Yes.

Agreed. Many factors went into our poor play this last season. I guess poor player development is just a feeling that I get. Fate conspires against Butch Jones, and then he goes ahead and makes dumb decisions and says dumb things to add to it.
I really want to like the guy and I want him to be wildly successful, I just don't think it's going to happen. I guess I'm left wondering if it is just a random confluence of negative circumstances, simply bad coaching or poor player development. Not enough hard evidence to tell IMO.
I want the guys who come to Knoxville to get a solid product from the coaching staff because I think that's what we always were. Come to Tennessee and the Pumpkin King will make you the best football player you can be. If the current coaching staff isn't turning out the caliber players based on the potential they have, players will look elsewhere.

Don't think it will be a blowout either way.
Could easily see tech winning though.

I wonder if this takes into account how many players started games or only who the most consistent starter was per position. We had just about everyone starting at some point last year.

Oddly I actually give UT a better chance of winning because it's the first game of the year. I would much rather open the season against a triple option offense than have it sandwiched between spread variations and more conventional systems in the middle of the season.
For one, their defense will be healthy to open the year. Second, even Butch knows it's a bitch to play option offenses and will prepare accordingly.

Butch didn't get them prepared for App State

I don't think there's ever a "good" time to face that offense. You make a good argument for first game being beneficial.
I just think that to succeed against an offense like that you need to be firing on all cylinders and that's usually not the case the first game of the season.

Tech offense sucks in opening games vs good opponents.

With a first year QB to boot.

The only advantage I see on paper for UT is returning starts on the OL.
UT - 111
GT - 54
Phil Steele Returning OL Starts
They have approximately the same number of starters coming back, and both are breaking in new QBs. GT is returning back it's two leading RBs and UT lost both of theirs.
