Am I crazy to think that Georgia Tech wins by double digits in this one?

Tennessee lost a good bit off of their defense and open up the season against one of the toughest offenses to prepare for. Combine that with breaking in a new starter and this sets up to be a really really tricky game for the Vols.

Maybe I'm still recovering and have recency bias from the UGA/GT game from the end of last season but this doesn't seem like a good match up for Tennessee at all.

Please spare me the "we have all off season to prepare" - if Butch is game planning all off season for Georgia Tech, he should be fired before kickoff.

On one hand they do have "all off season to prepare" but unless their scout team can run the option with some accuracy, it is almost impossible to adequately prepare for. See Bama vs Ga Southern 2011.

Tech is a bad matchup for every team. I would have to think Carolina would lose to them if we played them this season.

I don't think it's crazy at all. Tenn lost at least two of their best defensive players (Barnett and Maybin(sp? LB) along with their starting QB, both RBs, and at least one WR.

The O-line should be much improved, the new QB looks like the real deal, we have a very good RB, a new and much improved strength coach, much upgraded position coaches, super gamer receiver Juan Jennings and Currie’s Valkyrie, Phat Phil Fulmer looking over Lyle’s shoulder all suggest a pretty good game at least.

Don't know about that, but I'd be worried if I were UT. Losing Week 1 would not be an ideal start to the season, and in all likelihood it would doom their chances of having a decent year.

I see Tennessee as a 7-5 type team this year. A loss to Georgia Tech would probably push that to 6-6, and I don't think Butch Jones survives with a record like that.

Lost a lot on defense towards the end of the year and that skews perception. We will have everyone healthy (at the start of the game at least) with more players in their natural positions and a whole offseason of prep and rehab. Also, when Butch has a lot of time to prepare for an opponent we usually blow them out (bowl games). Its not a pushover game and I'm not calling a win but I doubt we see a double digit victory.

Like someone else said, our O-line will be a strength. Because we are breaking in a new QB we will most likely rely on the running game and try and control the clock (I know that's their game too). Plenty of playmakers on offense. Will be a good game

Our defense will be better this year than last year. We had more injuries than probably anyone in the country last yr on defense. The only concern with ga tech is our dlines knees. This will be a cake game we win by 14+

It wouldn't doom anything. It would suck, but winning the east would still be 100% attainable and that's the goal

Butch Jones wouldn't survive a record like that. But I doubt we go 6-6 or 7-5. The only for sure loss on our schedule at this point is Bama. We have the team to compete with every other team on our schedule this year. We get UGA, LSU, Vandy, and South Carolina at home this season. I know you hate UT but lets chill for a minute on the doom and gloom.

Its way too early to predict this game. You havent seen either team play this year so you really hAve no clue what they have.

I just don't see that as the same type of prep. Practice prep for the first game usually starts 2 weeks before. You're not practicing all spring/summer/fall for that first opponent. Especially not like you're prepping for a bowl game.

I definitely think it will. I'm actually more interested in watching this than Florida/Michigan.

Assuming you're not being sarcastic, you can't predict any games in the first week then?

That seems pretty dumb.

I think it will be a good game. Tennessee is more talented obviously, but I don't remember them having played a similar offense recently.

From their history against Georgia, it's especially tough the first time a defensive staff sees it.

GaTech isn't fun to play, period. UT's rushing defense ranked #104 in the nation last year with 219 rush yards per game allowed. Defending the option all game sucks. Vols run-d has to step up.

And the first game generally isn't the best game a team plays. That goes for GT as well, but opening against that offense is just brutal.

I could be wrong but I am pretty sure I saw an article from the spring about having the scout team running the option for some early prep. Sometimes CBJ isn't the brightest bulb in the bunch but he recognizes the importance of this game and also how this style of offense can wreck you if youre not prepared. He will have the guys ready to play. But then execution and in-game decisions become a huge factor and we wont know anything about that until the game is on.

Not between 2 pretty much equally matched teams it seems. Not predicting a double digit win by either team for sure. Especially with that annoying offense gtech runs. It would be different if it were 2 unequally matched teams but not this one. I wouldn't bet on it either way, lets put it like that.

The biggest issue for Georgia's new DCs have been GT's in-game adjustments. UGA comes out prepared and takes care of it pretty well. Then GT makes some small shift (changing splits, pick on a different guy, etc.), and UGA's DC hasn't seen enough of it at that pace to counter. Players get frustrated, discipline goes out the window, and it all falls to pieces.
