Is There Any Scenario In Which Tua Wins The Job?

I'm not making any predictions about what will happen. I'm just wondering, is there any possible scenario in which Jalen actually has a legit competition for the QB spot that could carry over into the season?

We'll see for ourselves on ADay, but so far the talk out of these scrimmages is that Tua has a better arm. You see it in every media viewing period - every Tua pass is a crisp, tight spiral, perfectly placed, with lightning quick delivery. Every Jalen pass looks like what we saw last season - wobbly balls where the receivers always have to adjust, or it's just totally off target.

I'm a huge Jalen fan and have been since last ADay when I praised him as the best QB on our team. However, if Tua comes out on ADay with poise, pocket presence, and lights it up all over the place, and Jalen looks the same as last year, do we have a legit QB competition on our hands? And in any case would it be smart to start a freshman at QB again?
It could make for a really interesting dilemma if Tua really is as good as the buzz indicates

There is ZERO percent chance Tua starts game 1. Jalen is the starter. But that doesn't rule out the possibility of Tua pushing him during the season and getting a shot.

I'd say there's less of a chance that Saban will change QBs midseason unless Jalen completely nosedives. If there's any chance Tua plays at all this season, he'll have to really show out in fall camp, to the point where he looks like the better QB in every practice. In which case, he'd be taking snaps in game one.

Of course there is that possibility. I doubt it will happen and I more seriously doubt it would happen before the season, but to answer to your hypothetical scenario: Hurts could play horribly vs FSU, Tua come off the bench, play great and win the game, and start the next game. As noted, I don't expect such a thing to happen. It's a new season, and I hope Hurts is All American this year. Just responding to your "scenario".

As for that, another hypothetical scenario could be that Hurts gets a horrible flue before the FSU game, Tua is suspended for the first game for an undisclosed violation of rules, and the other freshman might start the game, play great, never relinquish the starting job as long as he's at UA,become a 3 year All American, go pro and become a certain NFL hall of famer. There is no boundary for hypothetical scenarios.

0% chance.

Remember his quote about talking to Saban the day after the Clemson game and getting started on 2017? Saban was sold at that moment.

Still a long shot but I think more realistic scenario is a two QB system where Jalen is primarily the running QB and Tua is the passing one. Not gonna happen though.

Also not going to happen, but would be kind of cool to watch Alabama break out the wishbone or other triple option offense vs some teams, with Hurts at QB. Till we start completing passes downfield, anyway, the wishbone wouldn't have a chance with the speed of defenders these days.

Flexbone with Hurts at QB:

Running Back Group 1:
Slotbacks: D Harris and Jacobs
Fullback: Bo

Group 2:
Slotbacks: Emmons and Robinson
Fullback: N Harris

Only way to get all the running backs involved. It would probably be a great offense against most teams.

In seriousness though, I would like to see us have a full house/diamond pistol set in the playbook. I just don't understand why we never put more than one back on the field at once. Lane did it on rare occasions but not enough.

Man, that would be fun to watch if it were to be successful. Not as our regular offense, but in certain scenarios vs certain defenses.

IMO Hurts would have to regress drastically and Tua would have to be unstoppable. While Jalen wasn't as accurate as some of us would have liked he went 14-1 as a true Freshman. The media storm and distractions would be unreal if there were to be a legit QB battle. I could see it "possibly" happening in the season but it would take very poor play by Hurts and a few losses.

I may be wrong but I doubt Saban gives two fricks what the media thinks. Also our team is so elite especially on defense that we still win games with bad quarterback play like we did against Auburn, Washington etc and almost still won against Clemson. If Tua is the real deal and Jalen still struggles then you would be a fool to think we would have to lose multiple games before Hurts is replaced. Give me a break dude.

It's possible, but I hope it's not necessary. If Jalen plays poorly enough, Saban would certainly yank him and throw in Tua. In 2014, there were a few games when Blake Sims would have an awful stretch of series and Saban would have Jake Coker warming up on the sideline. But Blake always seemed to get his shite together and finish strong.

Also, we just spent the better part of 4 years complaining about breaking in a new quarterback every year and now we finally have a young QB that we can get a steady 3 or 4 years out of and we are coming up with scenarios having him lose his job. GET DA FAK OUTTA HERE YOU MONSTERS.

I think it comes down to this:
How much better would Tua have to look in practices to get a real shot in the game?
Or, how bad would Jalen have to play?

I think if Tua consistently outperforms Jalen throughout fall camp, and the light really comes on for him, we might have a real situation.
Hell, after ADay we might have half the fanbase saying Tua should start...

It's easy to look like Elway against air. Question is, how does he look against some fierce competition. I doubt he beats Jalen out, especially if Jalen is improving like we've heard.

We have seen that Saban isn't afraid to play a true freshman. Whoever is the best come the end of August will play.

As someone who's been to both scrimmages. Just stop. Jalen is improving and we went 14-1 with him. He looks improved against a live defense and Tua looks great for a true freshman but he's got a long way to go to catch Jalen.

I'll take your word for it, but despite being a big Jalen fan, I'm not one of the people that thinks Jalen should have a free pass just because we went 14-1 last year with him. If Tua is better, he's better.
Again, I'm not making any predictions. We'll see for ourselves on Saturday
