I wouldnt be surprised if this was the goal all along. The computers did too good a job and teams the conferences and networks didnt want ranked were getting in so they started lobbying for more human intervention in the formula which defies logic to the point that the system fails and then the conferences and networks can cry that we need a playoff system which "settles it on the field", nevermind that the teams selected for the playoff system are being selected by a super cool and totally unbiased group of college football super fans. What could possibly go wrong there?

Three things basically killed the bcs. 2004 an undefeated SEC Champ(Auburn) got left out. Then mid-majors(BSU, TCU, Utah etc..) started going undefeated. The final blow was the LSU/Bama rematch. That one pissed off some folks. I am sure things were tampered with, and humans corruption was still there, since the human polls were 2/3rds of the bcs poll. I wouldn't mind if the bcs formula was used to determine the 4 teams. The thing is the computers won't give a shite about conference champions or what conference you play in. They only cared about who you beat, and who beat you.

Eventually someone will get wrongfully left out of the 4 team system and within 3 years of that we will have an 8 team playoff. If you are on the cusp of 8th place and you get left out, it's safe to say you wouldn't win an 8 team tournament. Problem solved.
Only issue we have is moving to a 16 game season. We could just eliminate FCS games from bowl eligibility and move to an 11 game regular season. Have a consolation game for teams that didn't make their conference championship so everyone still gets 12 plus a bowl if you are eligible. So 1st in each division plays for the championship. 2nd in each division plays just because. and so on.

Eventually, maybe BSU this year. The thing is, the other "bcs busters" are now power 5. The P5 conference champions are getting the benefit of the doubt. It will take a 2007 type year, where everybody has 2 losses to create absolute chaos. In my 35 years of watching college ball, i have only seen one 2 loss national champion, at least that I can remember. The system was implemented to keep the regular season as meaningful as it was before playoffs. The 8 team playoffs allows two loss teams in, and that is what the powers that be don't want. This much is clear.

Why not let a few 2 loss teams in the playoff? If an 8 seed beats a 1 seed, then the 1 seed doesn't deserve the natty. Pretty simple logic.
