Not reading all that shite.
UA-AU is probably more fierce and AU has been more relevant lately than UT.
There was a nearly 50 hiatus in the Iron Bowl but Bama has always played UT. UT has been more relevant than AU over time.
Until Fulmer arrived on the scene, the rivalry with UT was one of pretty much mutual respect. There really wasn't the pure hate you see with AU. For a true rivalry to exist, there should be at least a level of respect otherwise its just a bunch of people who hate each other and a couple of dead trees.
Whenever AU starts their talk of moving to the East, it's interesting that Bama's position would be the TSIO will be played before the Iron Bowl. That alone should tell you everything you need to know.

So you are telling me that Bama fans truly think that Tennessee is their biggest rival despite the fact that Auburn is in-state, and their game against Auburn has been more meaningful for nearly two generations?
Yes. A lot of Bama fans truly think of UT as the #1 rival.

Why does Auburn not schedule Georgia Tech then? You could still play them every year. UGA does.

If you live in Alabama you know it's Auburn. Some on here like to pretend it's still UT though, which is fine.

I'm a Bama fan, alum, and have lived almost my entire life in Alabama. I can say that it is close to around 50-50 among Bama fans on which is the bigger rival. The older fans will say Tennessee, while the younger ones will say Auburn.
Auburn really didn't start to become a bigger rival until the mid 80's. That is when Pat Dye and Auburn started their attempt to move the game to their campus(rightly so), then a few years later the SEC expanded and Alabama and Auburn ended up in the West, while Tennessee was placed in the East. So the Iron Bowl started carrying heavier implications to the West race.
NOne of that is to say Auburn wasn't a big rival before those things happened, just that Tennessee was a bigger one all of those years. That is why the older fans will say Tennessee is bigger, and the younger ones will say Auburn.

It's just how I was raised >>> hate UT and laugh at AU.
But that's just me and my personal opinion, it's possible others feel differently.

TSIO is the south's equivalent of Michigan-tOSU.
The Iron Bowl is basically Michigan-Michigan State

I had no idea that Auburn and Georgia Tech were once rivals. They played 92 games and stopped playing 30 years ago. That's incredible.

Correction, UGA and Tech were our main rivals. To answer your question, it doesn't benefit AU to play Tech every year. The DSOR gives us exposure in the ATL area. The West is more challenging than the east, so we have more hurdles than UGA does when playing Tech every year.

That's my point. I have literally seen 3 threads about this in the past week, so I ran the numbers myself. I suspect any Bama fans who claim UT is their biggest rival actually hate Auburn so much that they are willing to create a fake "bigger" rival just to try to belittle their true biggest rival.
I suspected it. And once I ran the numbers, it confirmed it. No way anyone in this state under the age of 80 realistically believes this.

The answer is simple.
1a ) Auburn
1b) Tennessee (some older fans swap, but most younger fans consider Auburm).
3) everybody else.

Few, but this shite gets passed down. The people that lived through the 20s, 30s, and 40s, probably didn't give much thought to Auburn because we didn't play. UT easily became the big rival. They continued being the big rival through Bryant's tenure. There's still a ton of adults that remember that. I was born in 87 and remember more about games against UT in the 90s than games against Auburn. It's just always been the #1 rivalry to me.

its 1a and 1b
the much older bama fans and Tenn residents its UT, the rest its Auburn
On the other side, for Auburn. GA Auburn residents its UGA, Alabama residents its Bama
But these hierarchies are minute in their separations

Oh, you ran the numbers.
WTF do the numbers have to do with how individual people feel? Did you ever stop to consider the Alabama Auburn rivalry seems bigger in Birmingham because there are so many fans/alums of both schools living here, and not near as many UT fans/alums? Did you run those numbers?

If Auburn folk feel belittled just because some Bammers think UT is their biggest rival then that's just ridiculous.
If fact I've got a lot of AU friends/co-workers and we've never even discussed the issue.

Not many I would suspect as the hiatus ended in the late 1940's. Since around 1948 AU wasn't good at all other than a couple of years in the last 50's when they won a title (57?). As another poster pointed out, AU really wasn't good until Pat Dye came on the scene. Bryant retired and passed away and AU pretty much pulled even with Bama until Saban arrived. Tennessee however has always been good with the exception of the last few years.
Again, when AU formally brought up their desire to move to the East, Mal Moore was on the record as saying the TSIO would be played before the Iron Bowl. Of course, assuming we stay at 8 conference games. So there really isn't much question that UT is valued as a rivalry more than AU. However, I suspect that not playing the Iron Bowl would hurt AU in the long run which is also why Mal took that position.
