If you believe what people close to the program offered as the reason for the change, it may not have been entirely Malzahn's idea. It may have been a powerful suggestion from an activist booster with the potential end game of bringing in Art Briles at the end of the season.
As offensive coordinator. To work with his old friend Malzahn. To keep Malzahn on the job and keep Auburn from having to fire him and pay him that $8.95 million buyout.
If you believe what people with a reason to know shared with me, the motivation behind Malzahn's maneuver may have been strategic in ways that matter far beyond the final score Saturday night.

Why are these messages always so damn cryptic?

They learned from Phillip "I'm not saying, I'm just saying" Marshall.

I take it as Rhett gets credit, and gets another gig. The boosters like Gus, and are trying to keep him.

So, basically, a booster gave Gus Malzahn an ultimatum... Keep calling plays and end up fired, or give play-calling duty to Rhett Lashlee so he is used as a scapegoat at the end of the year. Fire Rhett Lashlee, or let him "find another job," and hire Art Briles to run the offense. This saves Gus Malzahn's job and brings in a prominent, yet conflicting, figure.

I think the gist of it is.........the boosters like their $8.9 million more.

We'll get briles junior as OC and Stidham. Briles senior will be consultant.

Correct. No way Sr is the OC. Rhett will head west to TX

Actually seems like it would make sense. How old is Art? Doubt he wants to "start over" somewhere at his age.

I'm not sure he will get a HC gig right away. He may need to go the Lane Kiffin route.

There isn't any booster going to say anything like this to the head coach, if you believe this I feel sorry for you.

I still say 1-11 Kansas will give him a call. That team is a joke, they need him.
