Then please better explain why you think the only reason this story was written for ESPN is b/c we are a rival to Texas.
I just don't see how that has ANY relevance to what happened and why this would be written.
You basically implied that if this had happened w/a kid from say, Syracuse, this story would never have been written. I just can't agree w/that at all.

There are plenty of other situations that could be written about, but they choose A&M? Why? Because we dared threaten the success of their investment in the LHN. Stay woke.

There are plenty of schools that had a mentally ill former player murder a person?

Some people in this thread seem to be suffering from their own mild cases of mental illness

No RC, I implied that because we are a bigger program, in a bigger conference, and a big target for a school they actively prop up, this fell onto ESPN's radar.
If we were UTEP, LaTech, Iowa State, Louisville, on and on, ESPN would have never cared about a tragic story involving a mentally ill person that played a little, but never accomplished anything in college football years into his past.

Well I very much disagree with you there.
I think any FBS school that had a promising freshman go AWOL and reemerge years later as a murderer who is hearing voices would receive this kind of coverage b/c it's something that goes beyond football.
Hell, you named Louisville as a school that would be small time enough that this would be ignored. You really think if the same situation happened an ACC school w/a Heisman candidate this wouldn't have been written? Really? C'mon son!

We don't have to agree, this isn't TexAgs

I'm going to assume TexAgs posters would happily push the "this is an anti Aggy story" conspiracy theory

When you're holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
When you're the fan of a major college program that hasn't won anything of significance in 75 years, everything looks like a conspiracy.

I'm saying this wouldn't have hit ESPNs radar. Do you not remember the headline in Dallas News? "Machete-wielding ex-A&M player"

C'mon, man. How many mentally ill former players from UTEP, LaTech, Iowa State, or Louisville have murdered someone with a machete?

Dafuq? That wasn't a hit piece on A&M in the least

"he's got mental problems", uh yeah, he hacks people up with machetes, i'd say he has fricking mental problems.
what about the guy he killed and his poor wife who committed suicide? what about a happy, productive family that's no longer with us?
i didn't see this as a hit piece at all.

I think it's important for these stories to be told. It's incredibly difficult to get someone institutionalized if they do not voluntarily submit themselves. I truly believe the people at A&M saw the warning signs and wanted to handle it, but their hands were tied by law. Just a sad story all around. I hope Tre Mason gets the help he needs because he's going through a similar battle.

hey TW, I agree with you 100%. It's tough to know what to do even when you see someone imploding right in front of you. The natural reaction is to get away from them rather than help them.
And it's truly one of the most difficult things in the world to realize someone you know and love is a threat to themselves or others. It's easy to just say to ourselves, they'll get thru this bad period and then they'll be back to being themselves.
Unfortunately in TJs case, way too many people did this. I don't want blame anyone because it's not that simple, but I do want to explore how we as a society can do it differently.
But I don't know the story on Tre Mason. Can you elaborate?

mason has disappeared at least a couple of times and had some run ins with the law since getting drafted. apparently too many concussions have left him with severe brain damage as his mother described him as an adult with the mindset of a 10 year old.
