Where is Murray? Why is he not out there?

And Malik Dunbar? I've been really interested to see those two play.

I'm assuming one of those two (probably Dunbar) will be the backup SF since Doughty isn't eligible this season.

But once Wiley is back, does Spencer move over and take the starting PF spot from Okeke? Or does he come off the bench as the backup Center and I guess Murray is the backup PF?

I'm also interested to see if Brown holds onto the starting SG spot over Heron. Everybody is expecting Heron to go pro after this season, but that might make getting drafted difficult if he isn't even starting on his college team.
I think Heron is clearly the better overall player, but I gotta say I do like having a 3 point sharp shooter like Brown out, and he showed a lot more on the defensive end last season I thought. So who knows, maybe Brown is just a better fit for the team

I'm really liking the way this roster is looking though. Been a long time since we've been two deep with capable talented players like this at every position

C- Wiley, Spencer
PF- Okeke, Murray
SF- Purifoy, Dunbar
SG- Brown, Heron
PG- Mitchell, Harper

Two years ago I would feel very confident about that roster making the NCAA Tournament. It's going to be a struggle with how talented the SEC is this year though

Don't know how I forgot about him

In that case I gotta think Spencer will start at PF due to our severe lack of upperclassmen.

Makes you wonder where Murray will fit into the lineup. He's 6'3" but plays like a 4, and we're pretty loaded with big men right now.

That feels really good to say when you think back to the Lebo days when we had nobody over 6'7"

Brown isn't starting over Heron. If you put Heron on that team though, it wouldnt even be competitive

Sounds like it wasn't competitive any way.

Just saying if Browm was on team 2 Instead, team 2 would never get a rebound

Team 1 HT
6'1
6'5
6'8
6'9
6'9

Team 2 HT
5'7
6'2
6'4
Walk-on
6'7

It wouldnt give quality scrimmage time with a team so thoroughly outmatched size wise

Harper ain't no 5'7", give him a little credit it probably looks like it when he's on the court but he's at least 5'9" IRL. Judging from seeing him in person at the games I was at last year, I wouldn't be surprised if he was actually the 5'10" that he's listed

I was just joking. That said, the "team 2" would be completely outmatched in size/strength at every spot. It already was the less athletic group to begin with

Few notes I've read from people who have been to practices. Mitchell is the truth. He is our best playmaker and it isn't even close. He can do it all on both ends of the court. Heron is just now getting back into shape/form. He had a stress fracture last April and they took their time with him. Purifoy is our best scorer but he is still struggling defensively. Consistently a step behind in rotations. He is going to play some at the 4 in Italy due to Wiley being out but baring injury the lions share of his minutes will be at the 3 this season. Dunbar had to do some work this summer to be admitted so he hasn't been cleared yet and he won't be practicing or making the trip to Italy. Murray has some type of academic hold up as well but they expect him to be good and hopefully able to play on the Italy trip. Okeke is bigger than expected. He isn't the skinny kid most saw in the highlight videos. He is a legit 6'7.5 230 lbs with a nice quick release. He can score and board. Spencer evidently has been working on his jump shot while he has been shut down recovering from shoulder surgery. He looks much smoother at the ft line and even hit several contested 3's in practices. Brown has been getting rotations at pg during practices and will be our 3rd guy there if we get into a jam.

They makeany comments on where we are now compared to last year at this time?

Compared to the lack of experience the other 3 seasons under Pearl, this team is the damn 15-16 Spurs

I loved this pickup in Mitchell. I knew he would be on the floor day 1. We severely lacked consistency from the pg spot last season. You saw glipses from Ronnie and Harper last year but neither were consistent creators or scorers. Mitchell is going to be a monster.

I think Harper can become a JJ Frazier type player for us, he just needs a little more development + doesn't have the consistency right now

If he was try and play just a little more like Tony Parker and a little less like Steph Curry, he would be dynamite.

Night and day. This time last year we were still installing the basics because we had so many new faces. Talent and chemistry wise we are much improved as well. This is a tourney team if we can stay healthy and improve on the defensive end.

I don't believe he has the mentality. True he was only a freshman but seemed too passive. Davion has a mentality like Russell Westbrook.

Luxury to have solid competition at pg though.

You been reading my posts on the Rant?

I actually made that exact comparison of Harper to Frazier more than once, and just last night.

Harper as a true freshman was actually a step ahead of where Frazier was as a sophomore. You're right about the consistency, but when he's hot Harper is a good enough scorer to drop 20 on anybody. He can drive to the basket and has a lot of range shooting.

He needs major work on defense and isn't the best passer though.

Mitchell coming in could keep Harper from ever developing completely into a Frazier type, but I'll take that trade off for Mitchell any day.

Talked about it last year in bball thread. Despite what 24 says, Harper is very aggressive on offense. I don't think he can be as good defensively as Frazier, but he should be pretty decent w experience
