I upvoted, though I don't really think it should be free. I think it should be much, much more affordable. I have just bare bones internet with AT&T and it's almost $100 per month.

Would be nice if Google Fiber ever gets available across the country. Their basic service is free in some markets, and only around $50 per month in others. There is a $300 construction fee however.

Would the benevolent govt give all in the house hold a computer?
What is the expected increase of computer theft? Would the theif only grab a computer, or the big screen tv and other things.

This

Although I would argue that the price of cell phones with internet are becoming much, much cheaper so that the ordinary low income family should be able to easily afford basic mobile internet. I've seen home internet plans as low as $35 a month, which isn't bad at all.

I'm calling bullshite on this one, Spleen. You live in the same metro I do, and that is MUCH more than the price of AT&T's bare bones service.
