Watching "The Best That Never Was." Dupree's final 3 was Texas, OU and Southern Miss. How was USM in play over MSU or OM?

Because we don't resort to cheating during recruiting.

$ from OU, and a glorified congregation pimp from USM

Easy answer: Because they sucked at football while OU under Switzer was equivalent to the Pete Carroll USC teams. OU was always among the top two or three teams in the country and was a perennial national championship contender led by a charismatic and very likeable coach. Why would any top recruit pick Ole Miss or Mississippi State over those guys?

Don't remember. Would refer you to this Willis Morris book:

On Finebaum the other day Marcus called in just to talk (and hawk his new book). He said he was being offered money by several schools...including 250k/year to attend one school. Claimed Bama didn't offer anything but Bear advised him not to attend if he was planning on being coached by him.

It was a pretty cool phone interview.

We weren't throwing money around. The ONLY reason USM was in play was because it was close to his home.

The Longhorns got minor NCAA probation for giving Dupree a pair of Cowboy boots (or the money to buy them).

Not related, but USM was the winningest football program in the state during the 80's. It was also the first or second largest school in Mississippi at the time.

Well Jerry Rice one of the best to ever play and he went to the WAC. Brett Favre went to USM etc etc. It happens and like Dan Mullen said "If you look around the state of Mississippi you can find jewels that get overlooked. We try to find those guys and evaluate. You look how many went on to play in the NFL and you realize how much hidden talent there is in this state."
