Random thoughts/opinions

Id like to share some random opinions that may or may not correlate
1. I'm a big believer in continuity when it comes to sports. I want a shared commitment between the AD and Sumlin for 3 more years. Formal or informal
2. For Sumlin to be granted those 3 years, I tell him to make all of the assistant coaching changes that are needed for us to have a 10 win season in 3 years time. (No coaching changes allowed over this span)
3. I believe with the right assistants...
• a new rb coach/recruiter
• a new defensive coach who has a good record with recruiting talented dbs (we've missed on waaaay too many the past couple years)
... That we have a real chance at a good, stable, competing program.
4. I'm really excited for next season. I think we have dark horse written all over us
5. The QB job NEEDS to be awarded at the start of fall and remain for the entire season. Barring injury of course
6. Sumlin needs to stop forcing injured players to play. If he continues to do so Myles needs to kick his arse
Lol @ myself forgetting Trevor

I agree with 4. We always do best when no one expects it, and no one does next season.

I am looking forward to seeing how Trevor looks in spring ball. He has more experience and is a better runner. I think he eventually wins out. Just my opinion

We all know we can't be good at both football and basketball at the same time. So now that we start making assistant coach changes, our basketball team, who previously looked like world beaters, is now severely regressing.
Coincidence? I think not.

What does that imply for baseball? I mean, they were good last year, while both football and basketball were mediocre/crappy.

1. I think continuity is great, but the only guarantee for continuity is with success. We already have a commitment to Sumlin in the form of his contract w/ onerous buyout. But no one outside the program, namely recruits, are going to believe that Sumlin's job is secure if he doesn't win more.
2. Don't think you can tie a coach's hands like that. No coach WANTS to make a bad hire. So as much as you may want to avoid it, you have to be prepared to make a change. Even Saban fires coaches. And if a coach leaves for a better job, you can't make him stay.
4. I'm getting more optimistic about next year, too. If the rumors that Jake actually outperformed Kyle and Kyler, combined with the proven record of at least pretty good offenses by Maz, and the return or Turner have me bullish on the offense. And for the defense, another year w/ Chief, and whoever he picks as Hagan's replacement... good stuff.
5. Like I said, I'm optimistic about Jake, but I also think there needs to be an actual QB battle. We've had enough of QBs getting handed the job.

You want my thoughts? The Jim Turner hire reeks of clueless-ness from Sumlin.
There, I said it.
He had a chance to keep Jim Turner in 2011, but his stubborn attitude brought in BJ Anderson instead because, well I really don't know why. Probably the same reason why he kept Spavital and Anderson far too long...stubbornness. I honestly don't think Sumlin knows what he is doing as far as hiring personnel is concerned. Look at how terrible our WRs have been since Mike Evans left. RSJ and Speedy Noil are using raw talent on the field and don't really look like they have improved since stepping foot on campus. Their technique and routes leave a lot to be desired quite honestly. When Sumlin finally got the opportunity to hire a good coach after Beaty left, he hires Moorehead...another recruiter (a mediocre one I may add). It seems he finally understands that all these 5*'s we've gotten ain't worth a turd if his coaches can't coach them up. Sure, it's a good thing that he is learning, but for 5 million per year, he shouldn't be conducting a trial and error coaching carousel while on the job. He can still get this turned around, but he will have to get rid of recruiting coaches like Moorehead and McKinney and hire more coaches that know how to teach technique and not just recruit. I no longer care about top 10 recruiting classes since it's obvious it doesn't guarantee wins. Just go out there, develop players, and slowly build a foundation that can get us the wins.

Agree with a lot of this. You should always be learning how to do your job better but for 5 mil kind of expect you to have a lot of piece figured out already.
I will grant that Sumlin is fixing a lot of his mistakes but it takes him too long to recognize the problem and do something about it.

Absolutely, we are poised to have a much better shot this year. Hiring Mazzone and not having QB drama queen Murray combined with Chavis's defense getting even better all add up to a more competitive team. I'm not saying we win more than 8 but we might and we'll sure as heck be more competitive in the games we lose.

I'm not sold on this. I do believe Jake deserves a shot but so does Knight. you absolutely have to see who performs better in the spring and who emerges as a team leader. Then stick with that guy.

I disagree with this one. I'm willing to bet that Trevor Knight gets the job.

If hubenak wins the job we are screwed. Won't win more than 6 games imho. Which is why I don't think he will.

so now the narrative is he forced an injured Kyle Allen to play? really?

Yeah I thought it's been made very flat that they asked Kyle if he was good to play and he said YES.

I don't buy the narrative that Kyle was forced to play. I think that Kyle was willing to play and willing to get shot up in order to do it, but that Sumlin should have at least provided him some cover for his poor play by admitting after that he was banged up without going into detail, because I also don't buy the other story that Kyle fooled the coaching staff into thinking he was fine when he was actually injured.
Both parties knew he was injured, limited in performance, and in some amount of discomfort, but Kyle decided he still wanted to play and the staff decided he was the best option they had. That said, Sumlin should have had the respect for him to say "he did the best he could despite being banged up" in the pressers instead of just allowing everyone to think he had suffered a nationally televised mental breakdown. There's a BIG difference between discussing the exact nature of injuries, the prognosis, the recovery time, etc and just admitting that a player was hurt and playing through it. Sumlin's a child and a punk for taking that to the extreme he takes it to, and it cost him Kyle Allen and a lot of embarrassment and injury to his next recruiting class.

This. The thought that anyone is "forced" to play ala Varsity Blues is laughable.

No the best QB needs to play. it might be Knight this year, Jake next year. Or it might be Jake both year. Or it might be Starkel in a year or right away. It should be 100% based on results.
