Athens Music Snob Alert. . .

Just saw a Lexus commercial during the first playoff game today....with a Pylon song as the soundtrack.
I don't know the name of the song, but I know it was them.
Is this some sort of apocalyptic sign?.....that the God Fathers of Athens GA pretentious music snobbery are now selling their music to be put in luxury car commercials?
Signs and Wonders

It's true and I love Pylon. Their shows were a lot of fun. I was shocked when I heard it too.

I've actually discovered some good music through commercials...
There's one where a guy takes his dog on a trip down memory lane for some reason. Can't remember why or what it was advertising (which means they did a bad job w/ the commercial, I guess) but, the song was a Willie Nelson song off a record called "Teatro" that I'd never heard of. The whole album is gold.
Then there's the Geico commercial where the little lizard guy is walking on a bar in Texas and there's people in the background two-stepping to a song which I found out is by a band called "The Wrinkle Neck Mules". Some of their shite is pretty damn good.
There's probably more.

They're not selling out, they're buying in.

Few things are more overrated than Athens music.
B52's were very good and original. REM has very good to dawg awful.
WSP is just awful.

You have to put it into historical perspective with bands like B-52s, Pylon, REM, etc... They really were original. Plus, their shows had so much energy, drugs, and hot chicks actually dancing. Fun drugs too.
The opposite was WSP, who copied and benefitted from the death of Greatful Dead right at a time when they were more popular than ever. They had scary, antisocial drugs and people just stared at the ground and shook their heads which apparently is dancing. I was in Athens for both these scenes. I will take the early one any day.
... And yes, there was a lot of bad music, but at the time it was fricking different and a lot of fun...

People all around the world emulated the Athens Music scene. This is not even up for debate. It tied in well with our legendary party scene and high concentration of hot party girls. I saw things... I saw things...

Loved The Producers! I hate it that any time I look for stuff from them, I have to wade through songs from the musical of the same name.

Athens music scene was and still is among the top in the nation. It was better in the late 70s and all through the 80s but is still a great scene.

There are only a few groups above who ever achieved national or international acclaim but all others were at one time or another we're part of the foundation of Athens music scene. Not to mention John Keanes contribution as a producer.
I lived the music scene for years in Athens in the 90s. I knew most of ,or at least met all of the above who were still based in Athens from 90-97. Jammed a few times with Davis who is one of the most talented session players for hire. He has toured with Steve Winwood and Clapton as a guitarist and done studio work for decades with Chuck Leavell and Allman Brothers. Randall Bramblett is equally accomplished. You know who almost every one of these guys consider the most brilliant songwriter ever to be in that scene?
Jack Logan. A damn mechanic from Winder. Rolling Stone did a piece on him in the early 90s based on a tip from a producer. He was an interesting story because he had over 600 songs recorded in his garage on 8 track. The RS team went to check him out and listened to the tapes and interviewed him. They left in awe and compared him to Bob Dylan. The greatest thing that almost nobody outside of Athens music new about. Soon thereafter, his 2 disc anthology was released with over 40 songs. It is called "Bulk" and would highly recommend to an ITunes playlist. Jack and his band Liquer Cabinet soon went on the old Conan O'Brien show as music guest. He had every musicians dream developing in front of his eyes except for the fact.....it wasn't his dream. He loved working on and restoring old cars before anything else. He purposely put the brakes on the ascent and faded back into obscurity only to play to a packed house once a year at a quaint Athens bar.
