You think our boosters are that smart?

I think our boosters are irrational, but not entirely stupid. They didn't get to where they are today by being dumb (well some of them probably did through inheritance, I'll give you that). Remember who broke the news about Mike Sherman being fired? It wasn't an A&M beat writer or a local newspaper...

The posts in this thread are a good example of why I try not to accuse LSU fans of being the most emotionally unstable fanbase in college football.

I heard about it from Rece Davis during the Thursday night game.

The job of the head coach is to make A&M an attractive place to be and avoid crushing assistant careers. Unfortunately some of the negativity spilled over to the point that a booster essentially scuttled another job for Jake. There was really no need for that - the guy was already fired so just let it go.

tmc, I'm going to take the part about the booster and make this more big picture/AD related (especially now that Hyman is stepping down, though I had been wondering this before)

Would a strong AD and support from the A&M system for that AD be able to change the chain of command, specifically for our football program, to minimize the booster influence somewhat? Or is the involvement we have normal at every major school?

Or to follow up on that...would Byrne still be the AD if he had done three things differently?

1. Given a damn about football

2. Not tried to solve every problem related to a revenue sport by "dumpster diving"

3. Not loudly spoken out against the move to the SEC, choosing instead to trust that the fricking Longhorns had our best interests at heart

The first two are accurate.

The second half of the third is not.

Byrne hates the Longhorns and hates DaLostDogs. He didn't trust them at all. He was definitely weary of them - THAT'S WHY HE TOLD THEM TO TAKE THEIR OFFER TO SHARE (GET 1/3, THAT IS) THE LHN AND SHOVE IT! He WAS against the SEC move though it was for reasons other than "trusting" the Longhorns. There's plenty to accuse Byrne of that's accurate, but the guy absolutely was/is the enemy of the Horns and wasn't trying to acquiesce to them.

It's pretty well known tmc is an 'in the know' guy.

It's pretty well known that he likes to trot that impression out at every opportunity so that sycophants like you will rush to kiss his boots.

You have fun with that. I guess this thread is now officially derailed.

Have you read the 100 Year Decision? In it the evidence is clearly laid out that Bill trusted the horns less than anyone.

Bill's big mistakes were giving Fran that terrible extension, and not fricking doing ANYTHING (including borrowing from the endowment again) to hire Buzz Williams instead of our current coach to keep the basketball streak alive.

That may be, but I was just getting back from another ridiculously late day at work (frick you XVIII Airborne Corps) and didn't hear about it until the game that night.

I agree that opinions can be expressed w/o vitriol. I also agree that opinions generally SHOULD be expressed without resorting to insults. But absent heavy-handed moderation, I don't see how you aren't going to have at least a few vocal haters at all times. And when things go bad, you're going to have more.

But again, I support your effort to civilize discourse.

Amen. Thank you. I'm not a big Byrne fan, but the dude thought the Horns were scum and operated on that assumption. Most other ADs would have taken the Horns up on their offer to join them as a minority in the "Texas Sports Network", particularly given how low-exposure and cash-hungry we were in those dark days.

T-Bird was right. Televisa should just buy the rights to an Aggie themed Telenovela! ¡Dos Aggies, Un Camino!
