Stanford does not play an SEC schedule.
I know SEC homers love to think of their conference as the end all and be all, but Vandy would suck even in the PAC 12 whereas Sanford would give most of the SEC teams at the top a run for their money. Actually think Stanford could win the East and probably finish 2nd in the West. They are well coached with a workable scheme on offense and a good defense. AAAAAANNNNNDDDD
Unlike Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss and most of the other schools in the SEC, their players can read at or above grade level....none of the see spot run stuff, also the players are required to have legit majors....none of this Sports Management/Information degrees.

I went to Stanford, and I think the key point, already mentioned are:
1) the history. No, it's not a national championship history, but the quarterback history (and Bill Walsh) have given it a mystique that has stuck.
2) Yeah, the athletes can meet a lower standard, but it is still a high standard, and their focus since Harbaugh on the o-line, tight ends and quarterbacks means they are always seeking guys who are generally speaking, the smartest guys on any team. Goofy guys like Luck enhance the reputation. So for every not so sharp guy their are three or four really impressive guys on the team.
3) The weather there is damn perfect. "Yeah, there is nobody in the stands but how about this weather?"
4) The silicon valley/entrepreneur vibe at Stanford is what gives its diploma the status boost. Other schools have equally strong students, but Stanford has held on to flavor of the month for 20 years. It wins the parent battles when those are tiebreakers.

In the past few years, possibly. Over time Stanford would be Vandy or worse.
Vandy probably would fare better in the PAC than the SEC with probably +2 wins per year. Conversely, Stanford on the SEC would be -2 wins per year. If you think of Stanford being roughly equal to say Notre Dame, then it is easy to see what an SEC attrition schedule would do to either.
Stanford would probably get clobbered by the top 2 in the East and the top 4 in the west. If Stanford wanted to they could have scheduled SEC more historically. I mean I can see Stanford ducking Alabama or Georgia but there is no reason they should be ducking a home and home series with Vanderbilt.
