quote:Saban did it at Bama, after having won a title at LSU in the recent past. He'd earned the players' respect from day 1.
It's a saban move that he learned from saban who said the same thing in year 1 at bama.

Was about to post the very same thing. When Saban did it, he wasn't wrong.
When Saban came to LSU, we had a similar type of situation; but he didn't rip the team. He lit into the media and fanbase, going on about that "deer in the headlight/chicken little the sky is falling" syndrome. Told everyone to calm down, the players would get better, it takes time.
That helped the team to buy in and respect him, and enabled him to take control.
If you come in and get too harsh without earning it yourself, you risk another Dooley/Muschamp situation.

Given the self-inflicted penalties they had last night, I can't say that I blame him. I don't know that I about it that publicly, but if they're not buying in privately sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.
Sometimes it backfires, sometimes it doesn't.

UF has a bunch of highly touted recruits who think they don't have to work. It needed to happen this is football not chess. Tough love is better than "oh geez we won so good job guys Oh I'm so proud". Dumb mistakes kept this game close and it shouldn't have been. Mac has a lot to fix in that locker room, he has to do it. I mean the Taylor thing was unacceptable. A throat slash? Really? Wtf is that kid thinking that's basically the number 1 celebration you can't do. Everyone knows this. Does it in a close game it's just moronic and he deserved that back lash.

I love it
As a member of this generation (I'm 27) I'm fricking sick of this entitled attitude. Show up when you want, poor work ethic, expecting shite handed to you, etc. As a med student I show up to work before 6 AM when I'm on and often before 5. And I don't even get paid for it until next year. Not showing up to practice? Taunting in games? Getting drink the night before practice/games? frick that.
I'm glad a coach has the balls to publically scorn such an attitude.

Don't be surprised if a few in that locker room think twice about their new coach
Those are the players he needs to get rid of.

Let's be honest, most of the best coaches in the game are kind of assholes that have gone off on their players on the sidelines and voiced their displeasure in the media.
Saban - a-hole
Meyer - Two-faced a-hole
Harbaugh - a-hole
Gary Patterson- Major a-hole
Probably the 4 best coaches in the game.
Not saying Mac is as good as any of those four, but let's not pretend like this will lead to some sort of players revolt.

McElwain has layed down the sword and taken the kid gloves off....he is showing who is in charge and it will be his way or the highway...Id rather lose a few games and correct the attitude than have jackasses run the place.
He was livid with Taylor and I applaud it...he didnt stop after round one either...he turned around and kept yelling to show how pissed he was in front of players.
Taylor is a legacy and basically a good kid who has never been in trouble...but I think a fuse has been lit under his azz...he knows Kronkite and Scarlett want to start at RB. I think we may see a more focused Taylor...who btw had his father guilty of similar thing when he played at UF. The other scenario is that Taylor balks (doubtful) and sulks. If his father came to me and complained about the dressing down...Id tell him "you have 1 son to worry about...I have 105 sons".

Being a mad guy does not make a good coach.
See your last coach.

There's a difference in being a mad guy in the first season cleaning up a shitshow and still being pissed off multiple seasons later.

True, but your thread implies it's a bad sign for a coach, which obviously isn't true.

What is this analytics sheet?
an overkill excuse for bad football.
i get doing research and having options in the way one goes about doing things, but it's too late if you need statistical help on game day.

Difference between Mac and the last guy is this. Champ did these theatrics all the time and for smaller problems. When do you that all the time your players will eventually tune you out. If your a cool calm and collected type like Mac then it resonates higher within the locker room and actually means something.

I'm glad he did it. Taylor is a junior and a leader on the team. No need for stupid shite like that to set a bad example for the younger players.

His respect meter just hit red with most of his players. They know they need a strong willed coach who will applaud their efforts when right and yell when they mess up.
