Easy there fella, not sure who or how those permanent SEC games were chosen back in the day.
Bama and AU both had more flexibility after the split in their OOC schedule since they had no permanent rivals outside the SEC.

Dawgs also played a pretty good schedule that year.
4 top 10 teams 5 top 20.
4 Conference champions:UCLA,Texas,Clemson and Auburn.

Didn't have permanent rivals outside the SEC, but AU scheduled Bobby Bowden and FSU for a decade when Bowden was really good. Georgia Tech too cept Tech usually sucked.

UGA, UF, and AU were the 3 best teams in the country in 1983 IMO. All played each other and UGAs only loss was to AU and UFs only losses were to AU and UGA. And of course UF stomped the shite out of Miami by 20.

Was very suprised we beat Texas that year...vintage Vince Dooley.Kicking game, defense and turnovers.
No doubt AU,UGA and UF were all a tough out.All had great defenses but you you Bo and the gang in your backfield.I believe Lional James killed us.

I'd like to play UF regularly again like we did when I was in school. I freaking HATED Florida. Worse that Georgia, Worse than Bama. Was not a nice rivalry in the 80's and 90's. I dont dislike UF so much any more. Im older and we dont play as often. But would be good to be on some sort of rotation every other year or so somehow
All of this.

Agreed, Auburn needs to be moved to the East and Mizzou to the West.

quote:If the NCAA changes the rules on conference championship games (either by not requiring round robin divisional play or simply by eliminating then, in favor of another round of playoff games) then that actually would make a lot of sense. You'd have 3 teams you play every year, turn the league over in 2 years, and play home and home with everyone in four. There's a lot to like about that.
Let us have 3 rivals, then play 5 other teams every two years... Our would be Alabama, UGA and Florida...
Being new to the SEC, I went back and looked at the scheduling history and it was rather interesting, to say the least, to see how the SEC had such a laisez-faire approach to scheduling, which resulted in some schools playing every year, and other matchups occurring as infrequently as they will under the current setup for cross divisional play. Seemed to be a whole lot of politics involved in making up the schedules back then. And, not playing the same number of conference games just blew my mind.

Just to get this going further, what would this look like? (And I know I'll get laughed at for LSU's matches...but I did try to take history into account.)
AU: AL, UGA, FL
AL: AU, TN, MST
UGA: FL, AU, SC
LSU: OM, TAMU, KY
FL: AU, GA, TN
TN: VU, GA, KY
SC: UGA, VU, OM
OM: MST, LSU, SC
MST: OM, AL, VU
ARK: MIZZ, TAMU
TAMU: ARK, LSU, MIZZ
KY: LSU, MIZZ, TN
MIZZ: KY, ARK, TAMU
VU: TN, SC, MST
Teams like SC and MIZZOU makes this difficult. Who are their rivals in the SEC?
