Realistically, Saban controls the Alabama defense, so you have to say he is the best or Smart by default. They are all fine coordinators. But on their own, I would say Muschamp. When you evaluate defenses, you should look at who you fear. While LSU's defenses were very good last year, I never heard one team say they feared our defense. Conversely, Bama and Florida's defenses have typically been scary. In '11, LSU had a scary defense. I am very curious about how next year plays out, because I really expect improvement from every team that these guys coach.

Muschamp easily. If anyone can produce a defense to go with the Auburn offense, it's him.

Both Muschamp and Chavis will now have a corresponding offense that is hurry up.
I know Chavis isn't going anywhere. I do have reservations about how long Mushchamp will stay at a school with hurry up.
We will start finding out who is the best coordinator soon.

While I agree to a point I don't believe it's deflection at all to say Saban Might be the reason of that success. Not downing smart, but as someone else said, he needs to be out of Sabans shadow for a few seasons with that success before he'd rank higher than chavis or Boom IMO.

The dude with the most talent. That's been Smart since he's been with Saban at Alabama. Chavis has had second best talent in the SEC since he arrived at LSU, generally speaking. Muschamp had the best talent in the SEC when he was at LSU, certainly in 2003. Had great talent at Auburn in 2004 as well.
I think I would go with Rob Smith. What he did at Arky last year was unreal, especially when you consider the talent he had. Not to demean Arky's talent on that side of the ball last year, which was very good, but he turned them into a nasty unit.

Since Smart has been a defensive coordinator his defenses have ranked as follows in the SEC:
2008 - 2nd in scoring / 2nd in total
2009 - 1st in scoring / 1st in total
2010 - 1st in scoring / 1st in total
2011 - 1st in scoring / 1st in total
2012 - 1st in scoring / 1st in total
2013 - 1st in scoring / 1st in total
2014 - 3rd in scoring / 3rd in total
That's probably among the best (if not the best) statistical runs for a defensive coordinator of all time. You have to decide how much you discount Smart because of Saban, but it's hard to ignore the above.

2007 - 27th scoring / 31st total
2005/2006 - N/A (Saban was in NFL)
2004 - 14th scoring / 3rd total
2002 - 15th scoring / 8th total
2001 - 39th scoring / 75th total
2000 - 32nd scoring / 46th total
1999 - 22nd scoring / 12th total

so his firs couple years at LSU after a complete program rebuild and his 1st year at Alabama. Saban had nearly a top 10 defense at freaking Michigan St for crying out loud. So yeah, Smart is clearly what makes or breaks a Saban defense....
I know this may be a crazy notion for you, but being able to coach under Nick Saban with the best players in the country every year is pretty nice. No one is saying Smart couldn't possibly be the best, but he's going to have to prove it outside the comfort of Saban before anyone will anoint him as the best. Muschamp has done it at three different schools. Chavis has done it at two different schools. The verdict is still out on whether Smart can do it on his own or under a different head coach.
