I've always been a big fan in Muschamp. And would have picked Muschamp before Chavis left. One thing you can say about Florida while he was there was ridiculous defenses.

A A&M poster did make a good point about Chavis most likely not going anywhere, and Muschamp possibly leaving at some point.

Also like the fire he brings on the sidelines.

I think when it comes to defensive development, scheme, etc.. I'll take Muschamp.

One year ago every 95% of LSU fans would have said Chavis. Since they are still melting I'm going to guess they will answer differently.

Here's more proof you just talk out of your arse.

A lot of LSU fans felt Boom was, and still is, a better DC than Chavis. This was true even when Chavis was with LSU.

ETA: Right now Muschamp is the answer. I'd like to see Smart succeed under someone other than Saban before I crown him the best.

Also, the next 2-3 years will be a good measure of who's better between Boom and Chavis.

Muschamp right now.

Chavis most overrated.

Steele fixing to make a charge to the top.

Pruitt?

One of the worst UF offenses of all time rushed for 400yds on his defense last year. He isn't even in the top 1/2 of DC's in the SEC right now.

somehow dawgs think he's some amazing DC when he hasn't done shite to prove that.

He shut down a downtrodden Auburn team that obviously had given up and they think he's some zenmaster now. Auburn schooled him with 31 pts in the BCSNCG, but of course our defense couldn't hold up their end of the bargain.

I would say Muschamp but I cannot due to Georgia Southern. That was a game plan and lack of adjustment shitfest on the defensive side of the ball. It is not like Georgia Southern had a completely new game plan for UF.

It's mostly because UGA's defense improved in every area despite deficient personnel.

I would take Champ over the other two. Smart may be the best one but we really don't know either way bc of saban. Once he steps away from him we will find out how good he is.

so his first couple years at LSU after a complete program rebuild and his 1st year at Alabama. So yeah, Smart is clearly what makes or breaks a Saban defense

Check again.

Nick Saban has coached 12 college seasons without Smart as his DC.

In those 12 years he finished ranked in the top 10 (the parameters set in the original post) scoring defense (the most important defensive stat) 1 time (in 2003). That is 8% of the time.

In those 12 years he finished ranked in the top 10 of total defense 3 times (2002, 2003, and 2004). That is 25% of the time.

Nick Saban has coached with Smart as his defensive coordinator 7 seasons.

In those 7 seasons he finished ranked in the top 10 of scoring defense 7 times (08, 09, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14). That is 100% of the time.

In those 7 seasons he finished ranked in the top 10 of total defense 6 times (08, 09, 10, 11, 12, 13). That is 86% of the time.

UGA fans are easily #1 on this board in responding to a defined question with a UGA-centric answer that isn't relevant.

SEC Rant Poster: Who will be better this season, Cooper, Treadwell or Duke?

UGA Poster: Some UGA WR nobody knows.

debatable. it only helps to reinforce your point because after rebuilding LSU's program, he had a top 10 overall defense his last 3 seasons at LSU. He didn't exactly walk into a great siuation at Alabama either. And he finished with the #12 defense at Michigan St. You think Smart would have fielded a top 10 defense at Michigan St?

Coaching at Alabama under Saban has been an absolute blessing for Smart. If you think he could replicate that type success at another school under another coach, let's wait until he finds the courage to leave his security blanket.

I love Bama fans.

When talking about the best head coaches:

"Saban. Duh. I mean, just look at what he's done with the Bama defense since he's been here. He has built this defense into the best in CFB pretty much on his own. He's the best defensive mind in the game."

When talking about the best DC's:

"Smart. Duh. I mean, Saban's defenses were pretty good before him, but just look at them bad boys now! Smart is the best defensive mind in the game!"

remind me, who led the NFL in scoring defense (the most important stat right?) in 1994? and who was the DC for that team?
