Honest question to Auburn fans

If Deontay Wilder was from Auburn and loved Auburn sports. Do you think the University would have let his heavyweight title belt defense fight be held at Auburn Arena or Jordan-Hare?
Just asking since Judy Bonner is a idiot for what she did at UA for not letting that boxing match be at Coleman Coliseum

i think we would jump on that opportunity to highlight the new arena.

I assume so, unless there was something about Wilder we didn't want to associate with.

Would have been a better arena than Coleman and is

Nah. Only holds 9,000ish people. Coleman is a little small for the level of the fight, IMO.

Then we need a better arena in Tuscaloosa

I'd think the Wilder camp would want a larger audience than Coleman or the AU Arena could hold.

For a fee, I'm sure they would allow it. I do see where it is not a cut & dry issue though since the event would be held on campus property and is not a University sponsored event.

Yes because he would be family.....duh

Bartow arena only holds 9K

I never said Bartow was a good choice. It sounds like Wilder's crew were searching for a cheap way to do this locally or something. They could have found a nice arena somewhere in the state to have this event that would have been better than Bartow, Coleman, Auburn, etc...

Where?....the only place I can think of is the BJCC...that holds 20K but unsure if this fight could draw that.....
I appreciate the fact he wants it in Bama but honestly I don't know why its not in Vegas...I assume Bonner is just not cool with the professional fight game coming to campus...

Von Braun center would have been a decent venue. Not as big as Coleman, but would have gotten a bigger draw, IMO.
Mobile Civic Center would have been a cool spot, same capacity as Von Braun.
Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery is outdated but would have sold out easily and has higher capacity than all of the above except Coleman.
Any of those 3 would have been better locations than Coleman, Bartow, or Auburn, IMO.

It's a really interesting situation. Perhaps they're concerned over the gambling aspect of it?

That was my first thought.

There is zero reasons to turn down the fight by JB. My guess is that there was fear that too many of the locals would come on campus during a time when the University was in a student recruiting cycle.

I have been to a few high profile prize fights and some big UFC matches. I am a big fan but the professional fight crowds and their fans are pretty sleazy quite frankly...it really does draw a shady element...
Judy Bonner is a matronly 60-something intellectual who has spent her entire career in academia. I doubt she had much of a inkling who Deontay Wilder is and probably disapproves of of blood sports like boxing and MMA...combined with the fact that you have summer sports and youth camps on campus at the same time, she she didn't want a fight crowd on campus as well....but agree at least Bill Battle should have picked up the phone and respectfully declined to Wilder and his camp.
