Don't understand her rationale for not wanting to hose the fight but oh well..

Bonner was worried that there would be too many anti-Harbaugh's on campus. She is old school remember.

Would have liked to see them fight there, but I can appreciate where the University is coming from not leasing Coleman.

I had no idea who Deontay Wilder was, but wiki informs bme he's a fast-rising star from Tuscaloosa and has actually fought a match there already. A bit odd to turn him away, but the president's reasons seem valid in theory. Not sure why a couple of summer camps would be enough to reject a major title fight, though. I mean, it's June 13th, so a college campus will be pretty dead other than the special events. You're not going to get much better than the middle of June for a good time to host an event like this.

We need somebody to invite Marciano1 to chime in on this thread. He shits on Wilder every time his name is brought up.

Bammers football program doesn't exactly have a good reputation on honesty and morality issues, yet Bonner lets them play on campus

Banners football program
Thanks Auburnphan. I agree Alabama is a banner football team and hopefully we will have another banner year in 2015.

Would have been nice to have it at Coleman

I'm pretty sure auburnphan vision is based on movement. If we are all perfectly still maybe he'll go away.

B/c summer camps are not just for local kids. You've got kids from all over that attend these camps - many of which stay on campus. They've planned the what, where, and how of these camps for months. It's awesome that Wilder is from T-town and loves Bama, but the activities already planned don't just stop b/c he wants to fight on campus.
I'm sure if there wasn't a conflict it would be given more consideration.

Wilder is a guy who has stayed committed to Tuscaloosa. He trained for his title fight in Tuscaloosa when many put pressure on him to relocate.
The problem here is that Bonner didn't call him back to say "thanks, but no thanks." I know she's busy, but a local hero is trying to bring a heavyweight title match to Tuscaloosa. Coleman would sell out and it didn't have to be done during the week of the camps. I'm sure if he would have heard "do it on a different date," he would've changed the date of the fight to be able to hold it in Tuscaloosa.
Coleman handles transitions from gymnastics to basketball every now and then during the season. This garbage about summer camps and being too busy to call the guy back is complete bullshite and Wilder deserves more respect than that.

And yes, I have a problem with allowing Saban's white trash wedding at The Zone like it's no big deal and refusing to even entertain the idea of holding a heavyweight bout that would have promoted Tuscaloosa's own.
It sends the wrong message of what we're selling. One would have promoted Tuscaloosa in a positive way, and one made us all look bad.

I don't know...it is perplexing she (or at least Battle) didn't give him the courtesy of speaking with him. A Wilder fight is a big-time event and its very cool that Deontay would want it at Bama.
I don't know if there is a real conflict or not....Maybe Bonner just doesn't like professional boxing and all that is assocaited with it and didn't think it was appropriate for the University to hold it on campus.... I am guessing....

I'd love to have the fight in T-town. He's been loyal to Bama and a huge fan all along so reward that. No problem. I'm just saying I don't know all the behind the scenes of why not have it so I'm not going to get bent out of shape over it.
As for Saban's wedding, it wasn't in The Zone. The reception was. That venue gets rented out to anyone willing to pay the asking price on a date it is available. Having the reception there wasn't the "favor" to Saban. Eliminating the fee probably was.

Going all out the way we did for Saban to make that wedding a "dream come true" type event is what I'm referring to. I understand that he gets what he wants, but if we can get a Rolls-Royce on the football field with fireworks and Big Al dancing with the bride, it shouldn't be hard for us to manage to squeeze in a heavyweight title fight when the champion is from Tuscaloosa and loves the university.
