Auburn's Awful RB Situation

This is particularly troubling since Gus's system is a one-trick pony that relies heavily on the run, and cut blocking. Add in the rule change that won't allow Auburn linemen to run downfield blocking illegally, and they are in serious trouble. And knowing how fickle and ignorant their fanbase is, this could very well be Gus's downfall.
Peyton Barber is 5-11 225 soph from Alpharetta, a 247 Three star that UGA didn't even recruit because Grantham (at the time) thought he was too slow to play safety and too small to be a linebacker. Now he's on Auburn's roster as a running back after flipping from Ole Miss. That's right... a guy not good enough to play defense for Grantham is now listed at a skill position at Auburn. That's not a knock on Grantham, that's a knock at how shitty Auburn's situation is.
Chandler Cox is a white true freshman fullback from Florida who got owned by high schoolers in the Army AA bowl. Another 247 3*.
Kamryn Pettway- another 247 3* who is currently listed on AUB's roster as 6 foot 242 pounds!! Rivals listed him as a fullback. So Auburn actually has two 3* fullbacks listed as running backs. Pettway, a sophomore, has yet to carry a ball on a college field.
Jovon Robinson- 4 star juco transfer with 1 year of eligibility, actually has ideal size and speed to be a contributor at Auburn. But as much as Gus runs the ball, this guy isn't going to be able to carry it 65 times a game without getting injured, so Gus will still have to rely on one or two of Auburn's other scrubs, listed herein.
Roc Thomas- Promising sophomore that was a 247 4* that squeaked out 5 ypc last year in garbage time vs San Jose St and Samford, and some carries in a 41-7 blowout of LSU. He could be a very good running back, but he's probably not going to be elite or he would have played more last year. It's not like he was playing behind CAP, and it's not like there weren't enough carries to go around, and it's not like he was being redshirted.
It should be scary for an Auburn fan to know their best two RB's are big question marks, and all their backups are scrubs.
In Gus's offense, this is a huge deal. And with the new blocking rules that take some air out of the tires of the Gus Bus, I mean it when I say Auburn may again go winless in the SEC this year.

As much of a concern as Aubs should have about their RBs (and DB depth and other issues), they are about to slit their wrists over recruiting this off-season.
As one of their posters have stated:
I mean, they have their Big Cat Weekend, and get one recruit and lose two.
That does not bode well for their future. Here's hoping it continues.

Good lord. Has a school ever been in worse shape recruiting immediately following their big recruiting event than they were before it?

They're basically counting on Thomas being solid and Robinson being the second coming of Bo. I don't know enough about either to say if they're asking too much. Either way, I don't envy their position relative to ours

They basically have two unknowns, and three Brendan Douglas's.
In an offense even more run-heavy than ours.
And their own QB question marks.
And a brand new DC. A new DC who.... get this.... kept Rodney Garner on staff...
Auburn is so fricked, it might not even be any fun beating them this year.

What I mean is that it's more fun when they think they've got something on the line. When they are analyzing different scenarios to get into the SECCG, which include beating Georgia, being at the end of the season, it just feels better when it hurts them more.
When they are winless, it's just not as fun.

I would have SO much fun with a winless Auburn.

Barber, Thomas, and Robinson are all very good backs in my opinion. All three bring a different type of running style to the table. Whoever lines up back there in Gus' offense will get their yards. Offense won't be the problem for them this year. I still think ther D is a year from being really good. They have the talent, just have to coach them up

Thanks for posting.
Anyone else have any opinions about these running backs they'd like to share?

It doesn't seem to matter who Gus gets back there, they get their yards. Their QB this year appears to be a better passer than Lil Nicky so safeties may have to cover downfield which will help. i like our backfield better but Gus knows how to run an offense. Don't feel bad for those assbags one bit.

Who is their new qb and what makes you think he's a better passer than nicky?

The downfield lineman rule will affect their offense... Especially on the PA stuff.

Only if the refs call it. They've let them slide since Cam.

Richt will be sure to let the refs know it's bullcrap.

The good news for Auburn is QB, Jeremy Johnson, could be the next Cam Newton at 6'5" 240lbs. He played in 6 games in 2013 and 7 games in 2014 so he has solid experience and is a much better passer than Nick Marshall. My guess Auburn will be more of a passing team this season give Johnson the option to pass or run on many plays.

You guys do know that this was a proposed rule that was tabled until next year, right?
Posted on 6/7/15 at 7:14 am to Biggen
I was wondering when someone was going to bring that up. ...

I've seen a lot of people saying this, and it may well be true, but why didn't he start last year?
Did Gus not really want to win?
If he was the next Cam he would have started over NM
