My wife graduated from medical school 18 years ago. I still have two years left on her student loans. But we paid every one of them
I never understood the thought that you could just not pay them back

Me either, and it needs to stop. That whole system needs revamping. Just handing out loans to everyone who wants them is/was/will forever be a terrible idea.
BTW, if you missed it, 29.47% of what you paid in taxes is going to pay for Obamacare. $$$$
