250 million years ago was the time of the Permian-Triassic extinction event when 90-95% of all life on earth was wiped out. It was the worst of the five extinction events the earth has ever experienced.

It may, however, be eclipsed by the sixth extinction event which is underway at this time. Scientists estimate that 150-200 species of plants, insects, birds, reptiles and mammals become extinct every 24 hours.
