What's funny is that Kansas and UNC both claim them before the HAF even existed.

NO!...absolutely nothing before 2000 is valid. End of story, doesn't count. It was a different game, wasn't real basketball, Helms was a useless media outlet and I dont care if the NCAA said that was how it would b determined, it doesn't matter . It was too long ago All life before this millenium is mere fairy tale.
It felt good to do that back.

Helms is an oddity. It's a retroactive award that very few schools actually count. For instance, Kentucky does not count theirs. On the other hand, second rate programs such as UNC will hang banners for them (perhaps to offset the impending reduction in NCAA titles). I wouldn't trust a Helms trophy. That said, it's a hell of a lot more legitimate than the one LSU claims.
Kansas claims 2 of them.
Edit: And UNC didn't hang a banner for 1924 until Duke tied them in NCAA titles back in 01.

Anyone with self-respect recognizes the Houlgate from 1941 back.

LSU can't say shite to y'all about 1941 as long as that banner hangs in the PMAC.

Actually not a bad troll. I'm giving you credit because I know how hard it is for you to not incorporate football into every sports discussion.

That's a good point. The last 21 times he has responded in a thread, I've seen 0 times he was not mentioning football.

Anything before 1939 is considered a mythical national championship anyways so you damn right LSU has one

Right. Kansas and Carolina are second tier programs. As borne out by their claiming Helms trophies. I don't make the rules.

Nothing wrong with it, really. Might as well acknowledge an award if someone thinks highly enough of you to give you one--especially in the years before the NCAA finally got its act together in 1939 and began sponsoring a championship tournament of its own for its member schools. However, in the ten season that postseason playoff games were played pre-1939, I do think that these non-NCAA playoff games should carry weight over the Helms selections since they settled the winners with head-to-head match-ups on the hardwood.
On the same token, keep in mind that for college football, the Bowl Alliance, BCS, and College Football Playoffs are still not to this day officially sponsored by the NCAA itself, but pretty much everyone still recognizes the winners of those games as legit champs since they played it out on the field.

I don't actually have a problem with people claiming them. I wouldn't ever do it though (personally), because I think it devalues the 8 titles that UK has actually won. But to each fanbase it's own, really.

I don't see harm in claiming a Helms...It's the gold standard pre-tourney title...It is what it is...

Everyone knows all titles from before the field of 68 are suspect and cannot be counted ;)

The HAF didn't exist until 1936 though, yet you have schools like Kansas and UNC claiming "titles" from the 20s.

Lsu played in a game where the winner was declared the national champion in 1935. If anyone had a problem they could have said so in 1935, but no one did.

When a Bama fan says "got 15" I tell them no only Bama has 15.
But lsu has a natty in football basketball and baseball so lsu is overall better.
