Isn't the Helms Award the national standard that the media and historical gurus point to from this era? I love cbb history and appreciate your input! I'll check back later...I have to take my memaw to bingo at the American Legion. Thanks!

Helms is an oddity. It's a retroactive award that very few schools actually count. For instance, Kentucky does not count theirs. On the other hand, second rate programs such as UNC will hang banners for them (perhaps to offset the impending reduction in NCAA titles). I wouldn't trust a Helms trophy. That said, it's a hell of a lot more legitimate than the one LSU claims.

Gotta side with LSU on this one. Teams that won on the court deserve it more than Helms' mathematical formula. See: pre-NCAA tournament playoff games.

From link by BluegrassBelle.....
The Louisiana State Tigers were invited to face Pittsburgh in the "American Legion Bowl", in a game touted to be "for the national collegiate championship" despite the fact that Pittsburgh (and arguably LSU) were not considered the top teams in their respective regions of the country. The Tigers won the game 41-37, and determined to call themselves national champions based on the win (although the Helms Award went to New York University).

oh, win IT on the court? I'm going to begin counting UK's wins over Transylvania University as national titles. We won a basketball game. National title.

If it makes you feel any better even though there is a banner, most fans don't claim LSU basketball has won a natty.
