You also had legenary Shug.
Of course Dye was better than Shula, Fran, and Debose, some of the worst coaches in Bama history. That wasnt the point. If Dye would have went .500 against Auburn as Bamas coach and never won anything more than one or two nonshared SEC titles with one or two shared ones, he would be nothing more than another coach to Alabama. We wouldnt have named our field after him thats for sure.

Pat Dye did noy beat Stallings in the Iron Bowl. He did however cry like a bitch in Gene Stallings arms before the 1992 Iron Bowl before Stallingd sent him to the coaching grave yard in disgrace.
So did Stallings cry in Jackie Sherrill's arms prior to Mississippi State sending Genie to the coaching graveyard to join Dye?

The sad thing is few Alabama and Auburn people know their history. Shug owned the state of Alabama before Bryant took over. I credit Shug and Ears for bringing CPB back to Tuscaloosa.

Both Bryant and Shug served this country and were bright spots for our state.

Dye was a good coach but he was fortunate to coach against Bama when he did....had he faced Bryant consistently he would have got his shite pushed in like everyone else....even with a couple of shitty Bama coaches he only has a .500 record....but I guess that is a hell of an improvement from where the program came from.
I like how people think Auburn was getting fair treatment from the State during the Bryant years.
Put Dye up against Bryant, BUT give Auburn equal resources as well.

My favorite Pat Dye quote.

Shug owned the state during the Ears era, but is slightly less overrated than Dye. Shug owned the state yet won the SEC once.
He ran a scam with the AP to win a title while on probation for his cheating. He didn't even play a bowl game. OSU was the real NC that year.

Do you really want to talk about the legitimacy of past championships Harvey?
You sure you want to go there?

I'm using your ITAT logic Stump. You know it's true though. Any AP writer could vote back then and Shug called in favors all over the south getting AP writers who had never voted before to vote for them. It's a historical and verifiable FACT!

Bryant:1-1
Perkins: 2-2
Curry: 3-0
Stallings: 0-3
Saban at Bama vs:
Tuberville: 1-1
Chizik: 3-1
Malzahn: 1-1
Saban was lucky he coached against Chiz, then, amirite?
As to Dye getting his drank on, I knew a guy who worked with the AU Radio Network during my time at AU in the early 80s. Said his job on Thursdays during football season was setting up for Tiger Talk by cracking the seal on a fifth of Jack Black and making sure Coach had plenty of ice in his glass at all times.
Also knew someone in the lab at EAMC. He told me in September '93 that if he were a member of Dye's family, he wouldn't waste any money on Christmas presents for him that year.
The fact that he's still drawing breath more than two decades later is proof that, whatever your opinion of him as a coach or a human being, you have to admit that he's a medical miracle.

To be fair, Corch was going through a rough time around then....NZAA and all....

Best Dye quote ever was when he was informed that Jeff Burger had got caught with plagiarism.

Bryant fired Pat Dye when he was an assistant coach for Bama for paying players. It had to be hushed up cause Bama would have caught hell with the NCAA over it. That comes from as closer an insider as you can get. TIFWIW.
It ain't worth much.
I have a friend who played then coached at Bama when Dye was there and he told me the Bear begged Pat to stay around and offered him several raises, etc…Pat wanted to be the head man though. TIFWIW. ;)

No doubt. He just could not win when the deck was stacked in his favor.

Ears had gone 0-10, 2-7-1, 2-7-1 the 3 years before Bryant got there. If Bryant had more resources than Pat Dye well then he worked for it cause he sure as hell didn't walk in to a good set up. Dye had the same opportunity. But there was only one Bear Bryant.
