Interview from the Bear
LINK
Phil Snow: Would you rather not have a guy as close as Pat is to you be the coach at Auburn?
Bear Bryant: Yeah, I’d rather he wouldn’t be the coach at Auburn.
Snow: Why is that, coach?
Bryant: Because he’s a friend of mine. I want him to continue to be a friend of mine, but it’s difficult to be as close as ones like we were and be cross state rivals. And I don’t want those Auburn people ruining him anyway.
Snow: Did you try to talk him out of taking the job?
Bryant: No, I didn’t try to talk him out… we talked before he was ever offered the job, before he was ever interviewed. I let him I know I didn’t think he should be goin’ down there I think. He didn’t pay any attention to me, naturally.

Dye has indicated several times that Bryant told him that he would be the next Alabama coach. Pat Dye did not think that would happen.

It is not Dye's fault that Bryant went out on a losing note in the Iron Bowl.

The fact that he's still drawing breath more than two decades later is proof that, whatever your opinion of him as a coach or a human being, you have to admit that he's a medical miracle.

I got an uncle that's been pickled the same way as Corch. It's a modern miracle.

Someone a long time ago told Bobby Bowden the same thing.......Looks like Pat & Bobby knew better and made wise decisions taking their own route - Bobby moreso than Pat.

Bryant promised the job to Dye......and Charlie Pell and Gene Stallings and Danny Ford. Hell I imagine he even told Jackie Sherrill the job was his too. He didnt want anybody that coached for him to ever go anywhere where he thought they might be able to beat him.

If Bryant had more resources than Pat Dye well then he worked for it cause he sure as hell didn't walk in to a good set up. Dye had the same opportunity. But there was only one Bear Bryant.

My point was that Shug and Barfield never got the support from Montgomery that Bryant and Alabama did. Deck was always stacked against AU during that time.

I will always respect Bear Bryant as legendary coach. I miss picks of his grizzled face, scouring down the sideline with a smoke in his mouth.

I feel much the same about Pat Dye. He was imo a great coach and cut from the same clothe as Bryant. The link I posted earlier actually takes you to the video of the interview. It was great hearing the Bear's country talk again--- straightforward and to the point. He told Dye not to take the Auburn job before it was officially offered. Both Dye and Bryant have made that a known event. Dye then goes on to say Bryant wanted him to take over at Alabama, but Dye knew he would not get that job. I see no reason to disbelieve this and at the end the Bear's words could be seen to support this.
Alabama has had some great coaches and one legendary coach.
Auburn has had some great coaches. Without Shug, bama might not have sought out Bryant. Without Bryant, Auburn would not have gotten Dye. The examples go on and on. The rivalry is the best thing for college football in the state of Alabama, because both teams are always pushing to dominate the other.
