Andy Kennedy is a tough coach to assess. On the one hand, he has only been to 1 NCAA tournament in 8 years at Ole Miss and that was due to a magical SECT run.

On the other hand, he has had more consistent success at Ole Miss than any coach in their history, and he has only had 1 team win less than 16 games. Ole Miss plays in the worst arena in the league (about to change) and has the worst basketball tradition in the league. They have always followed up good/average seasons with bad ones, but Kennedy has managed to avoid that. However, he has never had a team that broke through the ceiling. He will soon be able to recruit to a beautiful new facility that could give him an advantage in recruiting that used to be a disadvantage.

So, what are the overall thoughts on Kennedy from non-OM people and OM people?

9 SEC Seasons
8-8
7-9
7-9
9-7
7-9
8-8
12-6
9-9
3-3
70-68 overall

He's average but he wins a lot of OOC games usually so he has a bunch of wins.

FWIW we were going to be in the tournament before winning the SEC tournament.

Inconsistent. Dude allows his players to play to the level of competition like a mofo. World-beaters against Kentucky/Arkansas and meat beaters against Charleston Southern and MSU. And yes, I do realize that the Charleston Southern loss was most likely due to growing pains and having the team gel together. Still was only their second win against Power 5 opponents in school history.

So I don't know what to think about him ever. I don't think he does either.

He is a good coach and has done a solid job at OM. Andy Kennedy has benefitted from Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, LSU, and Arkansas having some of their worst stretch runs in program history. He will occasionally pull some big wins (Kentucky in 2011, Florida 2013, etc.) His teams follow up with unexplainable losses (South Carolina 2007, Mississippi State 2013) that make you scratch your head. He is the funniest coach you will ever hear speak. In his earlier days at OM he would show up to speaking engagements double-fisting and make you laugh your arse off. His teams do not play very smart basketball and that gets old, especially knowing he is actually a very smart individual who seems to get it.

Our new arena is going to change the caliber of recruit we can attract to the school and we shall see if he's teams improve based on that. Based on Auburn's recent stretch, I don't know if it will help that much.

We are consistently on the bubble and in the conversation, so from that standpoint and the fact that he works with awful facilities and no tradition (does the 1997-2001 era count for anything?), he's done a standup job.

He's good. I mean it's just basketball so who really cares?

Mediocrity for OM basketball expectations is acceptable; so AK is safe there unless he really starts a downward spiral. They are willing to pay a lot more (relatively) for football coaches, recuits & players.

Even with new facilities AK still won't compete well for top recruits.

Seriously, there is no doubt he can produce wins. He had a run in with the law a few years back. He called a cabby a racial slur that pertained to his middle eastern ethnicity. Should/could haven been fired. Wasn't but his teams take on his personality, streaky and undisciplined. He is fine for Ole Miss, and maybe the NBA, because of his freestyle of play and letting people loose.

He was 8-21 vs Stansbury. Couldn't out recruit him. Couldn't out coach him. Now he can beat State for recruits and out coach Rick Ray. It's helped his team just enough. Could improve more if he continues to take advantage of the situation. Big mistake for the Bullies.
