Can you imagine what Kirby could do with LSUs talent?
considering he has the same or better talent at bama, he would do about the same or somewhat worse

There could be something to this, when all the dust finally settles.

I think he would be a great hire. He's clearly done well for himself.

Smart has been Saban's right hand man and one of our best recruiters...especially in Georgia.

I welcome him to move as far West as possible. He has been a bigger pain in the arse to recruit against than anyone else we go up against.

He'll get a raise from Bama out of it.

So we'd go from "Third and Chavis" to "Third and Smart" ? I'd be underwhelmed.

More than likely exactly what this is. Did the same thing to UGA about four years ago.

the only reason i see Smart leaving is that he needs to show he is his own man at DC if he ever wants to be the HC.

Get out from Saban's shadow, but I doubt he would actually leave bama for anything other than a good HC position.

I don't think Smart takes a DC job anywhere. He's looking for the "right" HC job.

That said, I think our defense has gotten a little stale. That's nothing against Smart. It's just that sometimes fresh faces and ideas are good motivators. But, it's not a risk I'm anxious to take.

Jeebus, what does he think the "right" HC job is? He needs to move on and prove himself anywhere else or get lost in the shuffle when guys like Bobo, Muschamp, Chad Morris, etc. are all looking to move into those big HC roles. He's getting passed by his peers right now.

Smart needs to prove he can do it without Saban. Only reason for leaving.

Not keeping my hopes up on Smart but you are right. Boom could have stayed with him but his year at Auburn and Texas is what set him up for the Fla job. If Smart is looking to avoid being a head coach in the Sun Belt or another mid-major, this would be the route to take.
Not saying LSU is the route to take but taking a DC job away from Saban and having the full responsibility of the D, like he would have here at LSU.

I'm not sure, but I bet it's not the LSU defensive coordinator.

Agree for the most part. At some point Smart does need to cut the cord and go out on his own. No way a program like Alabama hands over the keys to a guy with no HC experience once Saban retires (this is directed at the baseless coach in waiting arguments). Especially after the Muschamp failure, I doubt a program like alabama even flirts with hiring Smart unless he's proven himself elsewhere. BUT Kirby Smart still is just 39 years old. He has plenty of time before he's really risking "getting passed up" by his peers.

You're a fricking moron. Our defense has only sucked balls in big games the last TWO years We were pretty solid in 2012.

Not saying it is, either. But hasn't he passed up Southern Miss among others?

If it happened it would just be about proving he can put out a great defense without Saban looking over his shoulder. I think most people should be able to understand that.

Unless he takes an HC job in the next year or two, he's going to be watching Bobo, Morris, et al all interviewing for big time HC jobs with better resumes than his. If he wants to slow play it, I get it. But younger coaches tend to be more energetic and attractive from a longevity standpoint. He doesn't have to take something this year but I've gotta think he moves on by no later than next offseason.

Oh I dunno, someone who can motivate a tired defense to rise up and stop 4th quarter 2 minute drives. Someone who can recruit and develop lock down corners and stout run stoppers. Someone who actually looks like they give a frick about whats happening on the field. Someone who wont get out coached by the likes of Jim Chaney !

Say, whats Mike Singletary doing these days ?

Mike Mike Mike ! At least ( unlike our mascot) this Mike would actually come to the games !
