The Loss to Tech

Everyone is saying that CMR's decision to squib kick the ball lost us the game. I'm done arguing that it was a legit call (it was, IMO), because regardless of whether or not it was the right call, it did not lose us the game. I repeat: we did not lose the game because of that play. At worst, it prevented us from winning in regulation, but the same could have happened from a big return had it been kicked deep.
What lost us the game was having fewer points than Tech (duh). We left 17 points on the field which--had everything else been equal--would have propelled us to victory in regulation.
The two fumbles in regulation and the interception in OT, as well as our inability to stop GT when we needed to, was what lost us the game.
Everyone can bitch and moan about "the squib", but if the QB doesn't make his longest run of the game the very next play, we still win. If we don't fumble the ball twice at the 1, we win. If we get an extra stop on defense, we win. If we don't throw the INT in OT, we win (probably, or at least keep the game going).
Whether or not the squib was the right call, it did not lose us the game. That loss was a team effort.

Tech had not returned it past the 30 on any of the previous kickoffs...They had terrible avg starting field position and have not been good all year....it was the wrong

While I agree that 17 points on the field will surely get you beat.........
Statistically we had a 99.8% chance to win the ball game according to ESPN:
"After Georgia scored the go-ahead touchdown and extra point with 18 seconds remaining, Georgia had a 99.8% chance to win the game. That's the highest win probability this season by a team that ended up losing the game."
Lowest Win Probability in a Win - FBS Teams This Season
Opponent Lowest Win Probability
Georgia Tech Georgia 0.2%
Hawaii UNLV 0.3%
South Carolina Florida 0.5%
Tennessee South Carolina 0.9%
Duke Pittsburgh 1.6%
So the argument for the squib kick losing the game for us is a very strong one. We were in a great position to win and we......didn't.

FooManChoo, I agree with you. The problem is, there are people around here who are too lazy to figure out what actually went wrong. They'd rather cherry-pick one play that cost us the entire game, as if the rest of the game were played in a total vacuum. The squib vs deep kick is probably #10 on the list of reasons we lost Saturday.
Don't think I've seen anybody discuss just how terrible the GT placekicker is. Everybody on that field (GT included) probably thought GT had to get the ball to the 25 to even have a fighting chance. Since most of you probably didn't know, I'll go ahead and tell you, the GT kicker was 42% on the season at 30+ yards. His long was 46.

Foo, I like you bud and I agree in principle that there were many factors contributing to the loss but even Richt agrees that the squib kick was absolutely a terrible call.

If Richt tells Morgan to kick it out of the back of the end zone we win the game.

The only thing wrong with your logic is that every instance you cited, with the exception of the kickoff, were caused by 19 year old kids trying their best. Richt had to interject his coaching skills into the contest and play not to lose. There's not another coach in the top 25 that would have lost that game with 18 seconds remaining.
