Im not sure why they are even doing this at this point. Is it so people can be mad until the final participants are selected

It's to create buzz like Ellitor said but I think it's also to avoid as much backlash.
It's like slowly breaking the bad news to somebody instead of blindsiding them.

I would rather them do it this early so you can get an idea of who they like. But they better be ready for a backlash if 2 SEC schools are in it tonight.
