So the total cost of Sumlin is somewhere around $20 million for the first year.

Is money the only factor here? Sometimes, the call of the NFL is great on these coaches. Personally, I think he hangs around aTm for a few more.

Well there's this

quote:

@aubreyrbloom: Brent Z asked why scheduling is so far in advance, nobody here may be here in ten years. Sumlin interrupts and says "Speak for yourself."

why does everyone think the NFL is what all coaches aspire for?

the dynamics of the NFL are soooo much different. so much more "business" aspect to it. totally different fan bases, totally different players, GM's, blah blah blah

Why do you think so many successful college head coaches have NEVER gone to the NFL?

No its not. The only reason Paul Johnson is still at GT is bec of his buyout...it was over 8M last year. It is 5M this year adn they cannot afford to get rid of him. Coach Booms is 7M, Ferentz at Iowa is 11M.

If we fire him his buyout is the entirety of the contract. Not sure why that's relevant here as we obviously aren't firing him.

If that cat doesn't take a crack at the NFL eventually he's dumb. I think the way he runs an offense would do really well in the NFL.

he'd already be the 11th highest paid coach in the NFL.

right now there are only a couple teams that could up his pay that might have a new HC next year.

I didn't say you were wrong. Saban certainly lied about his interest in the Alabama job (though it would have been odd for him to say he was considering it).

However,

I don't give a frick. He's not my goddamn moral compass.

That is a COMPLETELY different buyout. You are talking about the buyout if a coach is FIRED. That is not what I am talking about. For Sumlin, the fired buyout is something like $20+ million.

What I am talking about is the amount ANOTHER team would pay if they took our coach. Normally "big" buyouts of this type top out at $2 million. We offered him a TON of guaranteed money (so the fired buyout) if he agreed to a $5 million buyout to prevent poaching while our stadium is being redone.

That is why these "Sumlin to the NFL" threads don't really get to us. We made a contract last year to prevent this EXACT scenario from happening until after 2016. It is a very unique contract meant to screw some team (NFL or college) trying to steal Sumlin.

Now after the 2016 season, the buyout goes from $5 million to nothing. So if he is going to leave, it will probably be after another season and a half.

For us, yes. Doesn't matter how great the "call of the NFL" is. If Sumlin answers that call before the end of the 2016 season we get $5 million. Period. It is in black and white as part of an enforceable contract.

Exactly! That $5 million would add to the $5 million we pay Sumlin to give us a free $10 million to hire whoever we want.

That is the irony about the "Sumlin to ______" concept. The whole hope behind that is that when he leaves we will fall back into "our place."

But that ship has sailed. "Our place" got demolished and replaced by a much better place with higher floors and ceilings.

Where have I heard this before?
"The best player who's ever played for your school is now in the NFL. You'll never replace him."
Eventually, for whatever reason, Sumlin won't be the HC at A&M--some other swagaholic will be.
No one is irreplaceable.
