This guy is in way over his head. Granted it's not as bad as his interview last week where he said a 37-7 loss to Temple was no different than an overtime loss to Vandy.

It's embarrassing. In a regular SEC program he may not last the year. But, it's Vandy

Vandy looks like they are about to put up one of the worst seasons of all time. It's like the team has already quit.

He needs to learn hopw to keep Vandy from beating Vandy then. I know what he means...that Vandy made a lot of mental errors...but its disrespectful to your opponent to say that...just learn from the OBC and say that we were outcoached, outhustled and outclassed on the field.
Vandy wont have itchy trigger finger...its an academic institution and they are classy. He needs time to recruit and develop...at least he can sell playing time in the living rooms..but how many top notch recruits can qualify at VU?

Somewhere in Happy Valley, James Franklin is laughing hysterically

JF should feel bad for how he left.

Generally, I hate it when coaches don't give props to the other team (though I have no idea if he did elsewhere, because it'll be a few days before I can bring myself to watch any post-mortem.) I'm guessing Coach Mason is trying to take the burden of an awful loss onto himself. It's not quite as bad to get into self-blame when you're talking about a blowout than when you're talking about a close game because it's generally understood you were completely outmatched in a blowout, so you can safely talk about how badly you hurt yourself. Or something.
While Vandy standards are a bit higher than most, it's not as bad as people think when it comes to recruiting. Vandy's standards for athletes aren't going to be quite the same as for the general population. We're not going to take some dumb-as-dirt 5* physical freak of nature -- not that we'd be on most of their commitment lists anyway -- but we're also not going to require a recruit to be in the 98th percentile or above academically either...hopefully. I'm not ashamed to admit I'd be willing to recruit some slightly-above-average scholars in return for some top-notch football players.

Considering there may be only two decent teams in the B1G this year, yes. He may go undefeated.

It's have to be the maniacal laugh of a James Bond villain. I don't resent him for leaving, but I do have my issues with him helping gut the program on the way out.

Honestly, this is the first time I've ever seen his face. Didn't know Derek Mason was black.
Just listening to the interview w/o watching it, he sounds like he's winging it and really uncomfortable and unsure of what his team is doing.
Welcome back Vandy.

Aside from that one comment (which was asinine, but much less broad than your quote suggests), I was actually encouraged by the linked interview. Not nearly as delusional as I was expecting. The quote occurs around the 6 minute mark and is specifically addressing Vandy's lack of pass rush and poor coverage in making things easier than they should have been for Wallace. I don't necessarily agree that it had more to do with it than Ole Miss' execution (which he also praised) and superior talent, but he isn't wrong that Vandy played poorly in those (and all other) areas...

Dude is about as incompetent as they come. He'll laugh all the way to the bank just like Derek Dooley did. I wish I get millions for failing at my job.

Oh, good. That sounds better than Henry Jones Jr's account of it. As I said, it'll be a few days before I'm ready to watch any of it myself.

That is what HOD is for. When I was studying, some of the player's essays and assignments leaked out, there is no way those kids would have gotten into Vanderbilt without their athletic ability.

"They didn't beat us, we beat ourselves."
Sounds to me like he has gump potential. We just need him to learn how to win almost all his games.
I give him a pass on the interview, though. It's pretty humiliating to lose to Ole Miss, even for Vandy, so he was probably even more shaken up than after the Temple loss.

Derek Mason went to Camelback HS and then was a NAU Lumberjack. Guy can't be good
