One AU alum has upped the ante.

War Eagle, CAPT Doug Gordon '91! CAPT Gordon shows his Auburn Spirit as he takes the submarine to sea to conduct its initial sea trials. The USS North Dakota (SSN-784), is the newest Virginia Class Submarine that will be delivered to the Navy at the end of August 2014. The ship will be commissioned in Groton, CT on 25 October 2014 when she will officially join the Fleet.

Also, apparently the most badass sub in the world today.

The Virginia class, also known as the SSN-774 class, is a class of nuclear-powered fast attack submarines (hull classification symbol SSN) in service with the United States Navy.
Virginia-class submarines were the first US Navy warships designed with the help of computer-aided design (CAD) and visualization technology.[12][35] Around 9 million work hours are required for the completion of a single Virginia-class submarine.[35][36][37] Over 4,000 suppliers are involved in the construction of the Virginia class.[38] Each submarine is projected to make 14-15 deployments during its 33-year service life.[39]
North Dakota (SSN-784) will be a Virginia-class submarine. She will be the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the state of North Dakota. The contract to build her was awarded to Electric Boat division of General Dynamics in Groton, Connecticut on 14 August 2003. This ship is the first of the Block III subs which will feature a revised bow, including some technology from Ohio-class submarine cruise missile submarines.[3]

If the SSNs are anything like the SSBNs (missile subs), a deployment is a 6 month cruise. So in a 33 year service life it will be deployed for a total of 7.5 years (25%)?
Even if a deployment is considered a cruise for the blue crew and a cruise for the gold crew (1 year total) it will still only be deployed for half of its service life?

Article (wiki) said recent improvements may extend its service life (for some of them) to 2070.

Based on recent updates to the designs, some of the Virginia class subs will still be in service in 2070.[10]

Especially after having to sit through that Denzel Washington submarine movie after the 96 IB loss. I guess I should've turned the VCR off, but it was a good movie.
