When cops in a Rialto, California were forced to wear cameras, their use of force dropped by over two-thirds. Additionally, the officers who were not made to wear the cameras used force twice as much as those who did. This strongly suggests the majority of the time police use force is unnecessary. In other words, the majority of the time these officers used force they were simply committing acts of violence which they don't feel comfortable committing if it's captured on film.

Seems like this would solve a lot of problems and show both sides of every story.

I think they should or the public should be allowed to record their encounter with them. Some cops are power hungry and I have had a personal experience with one recently in my local area. The cop I encountered basically threaten me cause I didn't want to talk to him and went over his head. He made it a point to ride by my place of residence and came by looking for me

The up front cost would be a pretty penny but they would save in the long run because of a decrease in law suits. Good cops should push for it as it would push the bad cops out and prove that their actions in a situation were lawful. I can see an issue with always being filmed as they go about the day so some guidelines would have to be put into place like tape is only reviewed if an incident occurs and only the incident and any time leading up to it is reviewed. I don't think it would be a good idea to let cops turn the camera on and off because an honest cop could easily forget to turn it on during the heat of a moment and a bad cop would just constantly keep it off.

We use safe crisis management in the school I work in and most everything is on camera. Quite frankly, more than once it has covered our asses when a parent has tried to drop the "But my baby wasn't doin nothin to have them put their hands on him!1!1". Given the times, if I was a cop I'd probably welcome it.

Yes. Always. Their public service with their public funding should always be open to the public.

What if you live in a mildly affluent city where everyone knows your name
You don't want to be reprimanded by grandma and Pastor Smitty
But seriously, most departments would love to have the video cameras, if not to just cut down on UOF incidents. The problem is the 1) upfront cost of outfitting everyone with a camera, and 2) cost of backend systems to make it all sync up and actually work.
