Not many teams have that "standout" rb as in years past. What's up with the NFL trend of using a running back by committee approach?

It's a combination of several factors.

One, a lot of guys can be NFL running backs. The same can't be said for a lot of positions. Even mediocre college backs can get at legitimate shot at the NFL.

Two, running backs aren't durable. They only last a few years on average. It makes sense to run by committee to avoid injury and fatigue, and because you're probably keeping several on your roster anyway.

Three, NFL defensive lines are as good as I can remember. Teams need multiple backs to counter the looks they get from defensive schemes and to keep their runners fresh.
