Wearing white is smart at a hot game, if that's your main concern.
I'd say once games were on TV much more regularly people cared a lot more what they wore and what the stadium looked like.
Prior to cable TV and the rule changes in the 1980's, there were like 3-4 games on a weekend.

There was a rule where your team couldn't be on TV during the regular season more than 5 times in 2 years. That changed in 84 or 85 when the SCOTUS ruled against the NCAA control of television rights. The CFA was formed and BOOM went college football on TV.

Look at baseball pictures from the 1940's and 1950's (and earlier) you'll see many men in coats and ties and hats and the ladies in dresses and gloves.
We're evolving downward when it comes to dress. Grown men think nothing of wearing cut offs, flip flops and team jersey's to games. By the early 80's, casual for games was kaki pants and a white button down. Most of the fraternity guys wore blue blazers as well.
