Is he supposed to just turn that off and not root for any college football teams?

No way. He's just inferior to people who attended those universities.

My brother in law grew up in Louisiana and LOVES LSU because his Dad was a big LSU fan. He joined the Army instead of going to LSU. Is he supposed to just turn that off and not root for any college football teams?

No, he has every right to be a LSU fan.

Just like I have every right to call him a worthless sidewalker if he acts disrespectful to alumni of the competing teams or fellow LSU fans.

The issue isn't that you can't be a "fan." The issue is if you don't have real skin in the game don't talk shite to people who do.

If you want to talk shite to anyone without any ties that is what the NFL is for.

Alumni are untouchable

Also, the actual alum of said team's University actually PAID tuition to go to said University. $35,000-$50,000 for a degree isn't exactly cheap to many of those people. Just buying a shirt and a few stickers is a little different. Nothing wrong with being a fan though.

In some cases. In other cases mommy and daddy paid that amount to send Jr to said University.
In some cases Jr. spent all of his money drinking and chasing girls, and may or may not have attended the games. Then when Jr.'s school has a good year Jr wants to walk around beating his chest and tell everybody he went to school there so he is a TRUE fan.

Paying tuition to attend a University and simlpy living in a city is a little different... Using your logic it would be comparable to: Georgia is in Athens and I live in Athens, so I can be a true DAWWWWWWGG?

So those in Baton Rougue cannot be true Saints' fans?

Let me put it more plainly. I paid for my daughter to go to the University of Georgia. She never attended a single game until her junior year....and then only because the guy she was dating made her go. This in spite of living on the campus her first two years and the dorm being VERY close to the stadium.

I became a fan over 30 years ago, even though I never went to the school. Yet, I have sent more money to the University of Georgia and have shown more interest in the football team than she ever did.....yet she is a "true" fan and I am not?

Then that's just a douchebag who will get what's coming to him later on in life...fan, student or not. That just goes with the territory in any college.

Sidewalk fans are the reason college stadiums aren't smaller than Texas high school football stadiums.

This post is not about "true fans" it is about sidewalkers. It is about sidewalk fans. There is a difference.

While certainly NOT the case for many students...I'd be willing to bet that many fans (students) on here did not pay their own tuition. It probably came from their parents. So, no, they do not have skin in the game. However, many points you guys are well taken. I think ALL visiting fans should be treated with respect and treated as guests.....but if you remember the threads with the videos of fights at tailgates......MOST of those looked suspiciously like students, NOT parents.

I understand that...but there seems to be varying opinions as to what exactly a sidewalk fan is. I've seen many on here insinuate anybody that did not go to the university themselves are sidewalk fans. I, myself have been made fun of and ridiculed on this board as not being a true fan because I did not go to UGA.

While I can laugh this off and understand I have to consider the source...I also find it offensive.

This pretty much covers my attitude. If you love the team and cheer for them every year, in good times and bad, you're a true fan. The whole "you had to attend XX to be a true fan" just reeks of unwarranted snobbery. I don't give a damn if a Vandy fan never attended Vanderbilt. Maybe he or she couldn't afford it. Maybe another school had a better program for his or her personal career trajectory. Maybe he or she just hates the Grand Ole Opry after Minnie Pearl murdered the his or her entire family with a razor-edged straw hat, and thus wants to stay far, far away from the area. What does it matter to me if the person cheers for Vanderbilt? That same "sidewalk fan" might have been cheering for Vandy before I was even born, so I have no damned right to argue who is the "true" fan.

Then your daughter would not be a fan at all. She would actually have to show interest in a team in the first place.

I also understand the derision pointed towards those "fans" who wear all the school colors when the team is having a good year and you can't find them in down years. I HATE bandwagoners...

Should've went with Cy D. Walker. Your handle suggests City Walker.

She really isn't....and has no problem admitting it. I guess my point was that some on here seem to believe that attendance gives someone special privileges to fandom. I have known many people that never went to a University that were MUCH better fans...and much better behaved fans than some that attended the school. While there are some sidewalk fans who don't know how to act, I suspect the majority of the boorish fans are bandwagon fans and/or students/drunks.

The worst alumni are from Texas A&M, they are a freaking cult.

But in all seriousness, as tax payers I think every person has at least some vested interest in their state and federally funded universities (which include the athletic departments). So as long as they pay their taxes, gumps all over the state of Alabama can keep hollering "Roll Tide".

In the NFL, everybody is a sidewalk fan. (Unless they own part of the team)

Yeah, bandwagoners...bandwagonners? now I'm going to be wondering about doubling the 'n' on a technically non-existent word for the rest of the evening...are a different issue. I'm pretty sure we don't even have bandwagoners (I'm going to stick with one 'n') but if we did, I'd share your opinion.

Except I secretly hope we do get some, because that would mean we're successful enough to attract them in the first place.
