Because Alabama is the state school with a lot more historical success, the sidewalkers with little to no education will almost always choose to pull for Bama.
Alabama has a much larger fan base, and a lot higher number of window lickers because of this.
Auburn takes pride in the fact that nobody pulls for Auburn unless they graduated from there.

All you have to do is listen to sports radio in the state of Alabama. For every crazy Alabama fan, you get a crazy Auburn fan. Same with every state that has an SEC team.

This is BS and kinda like saying the NY Mets have just as many fans nationally as the NY Yankees.
Alabama has fan groups from different parts of the country that have absolutely no connection to the school like the Bridgeport, PA fans who are basically a group of Italian Americans who load up as a group and go to at least one Bama game each year and have been doing so for at least the last 30 years.

My friends are all in their early to mid 20s. Is it the older crowd that is afraid to admit it?
I'm 35 and it doesn't bother me. I haven't lived in Alabama, or even the South in 15 years, so maybe that has something to do with it. Most of my interaction with SEC fans is on the internet, so it makes it easy to not really give a shite.
Bama will trend down at some point, and at least we'll get rid of the band-wagoners.

Polls, tv ratings and shite. Also, I live in Florida. I rarely see someone wearing Bama gear, but get multiple war eagles every single time I wear AU gear.
