GMAC was such a great leader. The team rallied behind him every game. He was consistent and very accurate on throws within 30 yards. I will remember him most for his performace in the SECCG against UF and that he was a rhodes scholar finalist. Best of all, GMAC represented my alma mater with 100% class.

People forget just how terrible Jay Barker's play was against Miami.

If he made big plays that year leading up to that, I don't remember.

GMAC made big plays on the way to the NC, and played in the NC game with broken ribs.

For that reason, GMAC > Barker. And I think people will remember him for a long time.

Really? This thread is first I've ever heard of such.

Can anyone elaborate?

Whoever just mentioned Greg's status as a talking head pretty much just nailed it.

Greg will be on the forefront of people's minds much like Jessie Palmer, Todd Blackledge, and a whole slew of other good/great college QB's that never made it in the pros, or set the world on fire in college.

He's a good QB, great leader, great ambassador for UA. Plus, he's smart as a whip.

Listen to the radio show he is on. Listen particularly when he is challenged. He is a narcissistic egotistical douche canoe. I'm leaving out anecdotal examples when he thinks he is dealing with people that he believes are beneath him.

The flipside to be a talking head is that sometimes former players actually diminish in popularity amongst their former fanbase. When they attempt to appear unbiased they are sometimes perceived as taking it too far as is the case with Herbstreet and tOSU fans. Barker has upset a lot of fans for not taking up for Bama enough on The Opening Drive

At SECMD, GMAC picked LSU to beat Bama and argued that Yeldon shouldn't be 1st team pre-season All-SEC. Enough picks like that over time could turn Bama fans against him. Not saying it's right, just something I could see happening.

Jay Barker was consistent though not spectacular. The running game and the defense were the main reasons we won the national championship in '92. However, Barker did come through on several occasions, not the least of which being the Ole Miss game. Ole Miss sold out to stop the run so Barker torched them with the pass.

He didn't really start becoming a good passer until the following year.
