People love Southern accents. Only self loathing Southerners and hipsters who pretend to be intellectually superior to everyone else dislike it.

I've always had at least a little bit of one, and it has a tendency to get worse when I'm tired/mad/drunk, or some combination of the three. That said, if I'm speaking publicly or in any situation where I need to be articulate and might be negatively judged for my natural accent I can speak pretty close to completely neutral. It just requires me being very attentive to how I pronounce my words.

Generally, when you get to cities that are as large as Birmingham, there are a lot of transplants, and accents tend to fade away.

I'm on the phone with a client in Birmingham once a day. Once I hang up the phone I realize people are looking at me...then I typically get the question, "where the frick did that accent come from"

I only know two people from Mizzou irl and their accents are the strongest I've ever heard.

I have a slight Southern accent and much less than I did when I was younger but I hate when the accent is faked (poorly) by actors in movies. The worst I've ever heard was Julie Benz' accent in Boondocks Saints 2. It was cringeworthy.
On a related note today I started working with a bunch of people who came out here to Kansas from Mississippi for a training event. There are a few of them that I seriously cannot understand, it's like they're speaking a different language - very very slowly.

As an honorary Jerseyan, it makes me as frustrated to hear the stereotypical guido accent associated with Jersey. Jersey is very accent-neutral for the most part. The accent everyone thinks of is mostly coming out of Jersey City and even NYC.

It might but I don't think I have an accent. I don't consider Texas a part of the south, and I grew up in a Dallas. When I travel to New York or LA, if I don't say "ain't or y'all" no one would have any idea where I was from.

No kidding? That's surprising, caruthersville is wayy down in the boot of Missouri. Only people I know from there have incredibly thick southern accents
