As soon as I saw that score and "best game ever played",......this was the game that came to mind.
EPIC IN MIAMI

Because you have idiots running ESPN and promoting it as such.
A great game must have plays made on both sides by both the offense and defense, if greatest game were only considered by high scores the the 59-57 win by TAMU over Louisiana directional ( whoever it was ) was better.
IMOH, the best game I ever saw was Auburn vs. Bama in 85.
As for the truly best 2 teams playing on the field I would go with Bama 9 LSU 6, but it can't be the best game because both defense dominated, which is why the USC vs. Texas game cant be the best game either, the offenses dominated.

Well USC had won back to back national championships, was on a 34 game winning streak and was playing a team on a 20 (?) game winning streak for the national championship. The pre game talk helped, but the game itself was incredible, and even though there wasn't a whole lot of defense, the 4th and 2 stop with Bush on the sideline was the biggest play of the game. Definitely the best game I've ever watched.

How about a 27-24 game?
Those are ok, but not nearly as good as a 28-27 game!

I knew the first team to get into the end zone would win, it only took 8 quarters for that to happen that year. The 9-6 game was easily the most nerve wrecking game to watch

But the best game IMO was Boise vs ou with the hook and ladder then the statue of liberty

That's because your favorite team was involved. The UGA-Bama game was the most nerve-racking game for me, but I know that wasn't the best game of all time. The 9-6 was incredibly intense, and the defenses were great. That being said, the offenses were terrible in that game, and it's hard to think of a game with 4 missed fgs as being the best game of all time.

When you put it that way it makes sense. But if you look at as one team beat the rose, orange, and national champs that year and the other won the national championship that year then it makes for one of the best games all time

I love defensive struggles because one big play by the offense can win it.
By this standard, the AU-MSU 3-2 game was one of the greatest ever.
Great games can be either high or low-scoring; the quality of the play and the intensity/pressure on the teams is what makes them great.

I watched the 9-6 game on a cruise ship outside of Cozumel.
It was a pretty memorable experience. Even though we lost. Gambled afterwards and won a few hundred.
USC Texas was a great game and any ranking needs to have it in top 3.

Because the best game ever played ended 34-28 last year.

Did you even watch the game?
Incredible back and forth affair. Big plays by some of the best college players of the BCS era. Big names all over the place. Horns looked dead in the 4th, it took a heroic effort from the best college QB of the era, and a HUGE 4th down stop, to win that game.
USC's offense averaged 7.49 yards per play, the best of the BCS era, and Texas also averaged 7.07 yards per play.
There were two heisman winners ON THE SAME TEAM. Plus a Heisman runner up on the other. USC had won the two previous national titles and had not lost a game in more than 2 years!

I have tried to watch the game again years later. But they never broadcast it in HD. Its a really tough watch.
The announcers they had for it make it seem even older. I love Keith Jackson, but the other guy sucked(cant remember his name).
I think it was the last major sporting event to not be broadcast in HD.
