Agree, OP. Good point.

This has nothing to do with Bama or auburn, so God knows why this thread is yet ANOTHER shitfest about our two schools. The point is that great defense is just as much a part of the game, and with that recognition it is hard to call 41-38 the greatest game of all time.

I don't know why everyone got their panties in a wad. I was young when the game was played and I just remember my uncle talking about how good Reggie Bush. But I can see the points because of the powerhouse USC was and the heart Vince young played with and where the game was it and what it was meant and how it was won. My point being though was I just don't understand how it's hands down the great ever when it was one sided per se cause it was pretty much just an offensive affair. And if you guys don't know which 41-38 game I'm talking about that's talked as the "greatest game ever" then please GFY.

Records can't make a game the GOAT, it has to be on the field.

Hell Bama vs. Miami in 1992 ( 93 Sugar bowl ) was a 23 wins in a row vs. a 31 wins in a rowishhh game. not exactly sure, but numbers are close.

I didn't think of Georgia vs. Bama, but that was the 2 best teams of 2012, and that hame had defensive plays ( UGA intercepted AJ in the endzone, they blocked a kick for a TD, Bama intercepted twice and tipped the ball for a win.

ITS ALL OPINION I RECKON.

Best game in the past 5 years is the 2012 SECCG.

41-38 was a good game, but I hate high scoring shootouts where the defense can't stop anyone

Texas A&M-Duke is an example. You knew A&M was going to score each time they got the ball in the 2nd half, Duke had no answer, that's not entertaining if you know what will happen.

Both teams amassed 550 plus yards and a game that both defenses showed up for the first quarter then shite the bed. Why are offensive shoot outs so exciting for people? It would seem you'd want a game where offense defense and special teams all have a decent game sorta like a 28-24 game or a 34-28 game (no shots fired, it really was a good game) shite, the 21-17 Alabama game or the LSU-Clemson game were exciting despite not being high scoring. I just don't get it at all. This Big-12/PAC-12 offensive mentality kills me.

Pretty much because it was a great football game that saw the unbeatable USC juggernaut fall in the last second in a game that went back and forth all day long.

It may not have been definitely the best game ever played, but for the average viewer, it was some real good entertainment.

You can respect a good defensive slugfest, but at the end of the day your run of the mill fan is going to prefer some offense to running up the middle three times and punting.

Now that I can agree with. Neither defense was particularly elite, but they were both pretty darn good and both offenses were operating on all cylinders.

I think everyone knows that game was the de facto national championship that year once it was known Notre Dame would be the opponent.

I think a good example of a well played game by both teams was the 2011 Rose Bowl

NFL talent on both sides, no turnovers, offenses made plays, defenses made plays, special teams units made plays, no dropped passes or any silly penalties or anything like that, dramatic finish, etc.

Vince Young doesn't get the respect he deserves because of the mental roller coaster he went on in the NFL. That dude is the best college QB I've ever seen play.

Listening to ESPN in the lead up to that game you would have thought the opposite was true. There were quite a few talking heads who truly believed Notre Dame was the better team. Then it turned out to be one of the most lopsided national championship games in the history of college football.

Yes.....I was in stress mode that entire game...I think I may have worked myself up a fever.

Lacy was brilliant in that game and the NCG.
