Forgot he went back to Tennessee. Ok that makes sense then. But I still think your '01 team was the most talented team in Tennessee history

Fulmer was afraid of hiring good young assistants.
He was done. Should have been fired after 2005.

VOLS football was headed for the cliff long before 2007 but yeah Saban and Meyer making Fulmer their whipping boy did speed up the decline, no doubt.

I honestly think Kiffin and his staff could have been successful at Tennessee.

01 was very talented, but 99 was probably more talented. Just an absolute embarrassment to win 0 SEC titles after 98. If that isn't a fireable offense I don't know what is.

You're not the only one. I've always thought that team was more talented on paper than the '98 VOLS but didn't have the leadership and Fulmer was fat on success atp.
2001 VOLS and UF were the only teams in the country that year that could've had a shot at beating Miami imo.

I'm still amazed Richt won that game. First year head coach, brand new staff, freshman QB, hadn't won in knoxville in 21 years.
As time passes I appreciate that win even more. That's the game that really truly turned UGA from average every year under Donnan to the next level.

I think so too had he stayed 3 or 4 years but of course I'm in the minority with that opinion.

Fulmer was too loyal to his subpar asistants, as well

Kiffin, Coach O, Monte Kiffin and the rest of the staff just seemed to fit in well with the university. When USC hired him I didn't think he was a good fit there.

It really was a program changer at the time for UGA. Really got the Richt era going for y'all no doubt. I still cringe anytime I hear the phrase "Hobnail Boot"

they should have never fired kiffin, then they hire fooley. LSU had 6 consecutive losing seasons from 1989-1994. Tennessee is at 4

Short answer: talent and coaching. Some posted data in this forum today that showed a significant down-turn in the number of players Tennessee has put in the NFL over the last 5 or so years compared to the previous 5 years.

Well at the time UT hired Kiffin, he was viewed as this young up and coming offensive mind/recruiting beast and was sort of viewed as a victim of Al Davis.
Fast forward 18 months and he's viewed as the biggest slime ball in CFB, factoring in all the secondary violations, the constant media headlines and the way he left Tennessee.

Bad coaching hires, other teams in the SEC surging upward.

Tennessee is probably the only other SEC team i like because of our shared hatred of Georgia and Alabama. and probably some other rivals. Plus the color orange is cool

Kiffin+Dooley = the CFB equivalent of Hiroshima.

Dubose+Fran+PapaPrice = the CFB equivalent of Nagasaki

I don't think I've ever seen a coach more butthurt about losing a player than Fulmer was with that. He was the reason we got fricking investigated.
