Check out the Mahogany Bar, too, well worth it. If I lived in H'burg, I'd camp out there.

Depends on what you are looking for, if you think red lobster is fine dining and your idea of nightlife is all you can drink for 5 bucks, then Hattiesburg is great. The entire city is national chains from shopping to dining to most anything else. Weedy is wrong Hattiesburg has probably the least amount of culture for a city it's size in the south.

"Culture" doesn't really appeal to me. I'm a simple dude. Good times, good tunes, and good people is my idea of fun. From the sound of it, Hattiesburg is somewhat similar to Tuscaloosa, and that I can get down to.

As far as fine dining goes, if I want that you'll find me on the patio, beer in hand and meat on the grill.

You might like it then, don't mean to run the burg down it is what it is. Two of my kids live there and love it. Glad you can grill because outback and longhorn are about it for a steak there. They have every chain known to mankind but few local options.

You're really selling it short. Downtown has a lot of unique restaurants and bars, and there's more up and down Hardy street. You're describing West Hattiesburg, but I consider that Oak Grove and already told the OP to avoid it.

Yes Donanelle's is ok but for a town this size Hattiesburg should have multiple eateries of this quality, and Donanelle's although good is quite a ways from fine dining. Leatha's is great for lunch also. Hattiesburg is just a new city, it exploded since the mid ninety's till now and 99% of it is chain shite. Bet you can't name 5 locally owned resteraunts off the top of your head. Yes, Keg and Barrel and the Hog are cool but thats it, unless you are looking to play beer pong or hang out with the college kids. For a city it's size hattiesburg dissapoints compared to most in the state and region. IMHO of course

Jutamas is one of the best Thai restaurants you'll ever have.

E&Ls Triangle seafood looks shady as frick but it is hands down awesome seafood. They have everything. .

Rosie's BBQ on 49S for smoked meats and very cold beer

Add those to the already mentioned. . There's more, but those stand out.

He said he was a patio, beer in hand, meat on grill kind of guy. That's why I recommended donanelle's. They serve beer in a can and the cook is hanging out drinking beer while cooking your steak. It feels like a hunting camp. And the steaks are really good imo. It's a cool place.

Dude you just listed two places that use paper plates and plastic cutlery, and a Thai joint that is very meh. I live within 20 miles of Hattiesburg and will drive to the coast or N.O. if looking for a decent meal or night out. If I want to go to walmart and eat at chili's Hatt. fits the bill. The fact that Keg&Barrel and the hog stand out is says more about how everthing else sucks than how great they are, neither would stand out anywhere else. Hell most of the students abandon town for the weekend just to find something to do. The OP may love it, just not my piece of cake.

I don't care how good food is served

whatever man. It's a great restaurant compared to most other Thai places, and I've been to plenty. I'm not telling him places to go get fricking engaged to the love of his life, I'm listing where good food is. What's wrong with eating lunch off of a plastic plate?
On the other hand, instead of answering that just go frick yourself instead. Hattiesburg is a great place to live compared to anywhere else in MS..

Lol, you think the coast has better restaurants than Hattiesburg? Your credibility just took a pretty big hit.

Sakura, Walnut Circle, Brownstones, 206 Front, and Purple Parot/MB are great slightly upscale places. Leatha's has been featured on the food network as some of the best barbecue in the south. I'm not sure what your beef is with Hattiesburg but you obviously have made up your mind that it sucks and aren't looking around.

Casino buffets don't count. I've been to the coast countless times and I can't think of one restaurant I'd recommend.

Born and raised there. Hburg is a good place depending on where you are at and if you somewhat know the ropes.

The city government has gone to absolute shite (See voting scandal this past year)

How is the nightlife?

There's quite a variety of establishments but my favorite is definitely Keg and Barrel. Tons of beers, solid food, and a very cool setting.

Here's a few of my favorite restaurants:

Mexican Kitchen - Get the large plate
Crescent City
Leatha's BBQ ( )
PoBoy Express
Cotton Blues

quote:

How are the people?

Its quite a melting pot of people, especially post-Katrina. It can vary across classes depending on what part of town you are in.

I grew up there so obviously I know some fine folks and some not so fine folks.

quote:

How is the crime rate?

It has gotten worse in some areas. The walmart on 49, I stay away from that mofo after dark.

quote:

Is it a diverse city?

I'd say yea.

quote:

Is it all USM fans or an eclectic mixture?

definitely a mixture.

Hope you enjoy Toughburg

Definitely don't consider those, that's for the touristas. Give me a coastal MS city and I'll give you some good rec's. Going to Phoenicia Gourmet in O.S. tonight, one of the best there.

I do not dislike Hattiesburg I am there a couple times a week. Just dissapointed not much has opened there during it's growth spurt except franchises. A city it's size should be able to support a better nightlife scene and much better places to eat. Seems like every day a new chain sandwich shop or wing joint pops up but thats about it. Downtown is OK, it is just to spread out to encourage walking from place to place. Hattiesburg is ok, it just does not have an identity, nothing different from any other place.
The place is like a rice cake, neither good or bad, just fricking bland. If you feel I have insulted your home town so be it, go frick yourself.
