There are some neat bars downtown that are reasonably diverse and not all College kids.. You're roughly an hour from the coast and not too much farther to NOLA.. Other than Hattiesburg getting buttfricked by a tornado and smelling like sewage ever since it isn't that bad.. This is a problem that should eventually be corrected. PLENTY of good food and the cops are milder than any college town I've visited.

With that said, frick Hattiesburg and frick USM.

If wearing Abercrombie cargo shorts while slamming Jim Beam green label to Big 'n' Rich is your definition of cool then, yeah, you're spot on.

Southern Miss people are the worst. Hattiesburg ain't so bad, though.

There's a really great Lebanese restaurant right near Southern Miss. The grape leaves are solid, almost as good as the ones my SO's mom makes and she's legit Lebanese.

Yeah this was in the late 90's, and maybe I just happened to run into the cool ones there. I don't know, that was just my impression after a handful of visits.

It sounds like a really shitty place to live if you're over 25.

Don't ask for advice on Hattiesburg from OM or State fans. Many only rail on it because USM is located there. Hattiesburg is easily my favorite town in MS.

As to answer your questions

quote:

How is the nightlife? How are the people? How is the crime rate? Is it a diverse city? What's it comparable to? (My completely baseless opinion says Troy, AL)

Night life is good. Plenty of bar choices for young and old. My favorite place to go is the Keg and Barrel. Old house they turned into a bar. Fun place to drink on an afternoon in the spring on their porch. They always have something going on in the big yard they have in the back like a chili cook off or crawfish boil.

People are really friendly just like most southern towns. Hattiesburg people seem more laid back to me than most however.

Crime is probably the same is any other town that size. I've never felt unsafe there.

I guess about as diverse as you'll find in MS. Several people I've met there are originally from New Orleans or Mobile since it's close to both.

No idea what to compare it to.

SEC fans outnumber USM fans there and it isn't even close. Have a lot of Ole Miss and State friends from Hattiesburg. Plenty of Bama and LSU fans there as well.

I live in Nashville now but have really been wanting to get back to MS. If I had to pick a town Hattiesburg would be it.

Nothing that special but you can always have a good time if you want. They have pretty good music options. There are enough bars there for anyone. Cool little spots downtown for the twenties and thirties people too. Go to Ropers if you want to get black out and layed at a country bar.

How are the people?

I like the people. It is a pretty even mix of redneck, snob, hipster, thug, etc.

I can't think of a place much like it really.

quote:

Is it all USM fans or an eclectic mixture?

You'll probably be surprised by a lot of the students.

Start at the keg and barrel and go from there.

and this.

I like hattiesburg. I could easily live there. I can't say that about many places in MS. They get a bad rap on here because they talked a lot of shite when they went to bowls every year. But it's awesome because they don't do that anymore.

And the women are bout it.

I live here and it's pretty good. As stated before, Keg and Barrel is a good spot. Brewsky's for some live music with college arse everywhere. Crescent City Grill for some good eats and if you play golf, Hattiesburg CC and Canebrake are your private options. Both are very good. Timberton is semi-private and it's nice as well.

Hattiesburg is also the hub for South Central Mississippi and the only real civilization between the coast and Jackson. So, don't just go by the population. There are a lot of amenities there for people from the surrounding counties and the small towns around it. Add that factor to the university and you have a nice smaller Southern city mix.

I like Hattiesburg. Always have.

I grew up there.

Bennie's is where I party if I'm in town. Keeping it quiet, it's Keg and Barrel (huge beer selection, almost anything you want on tap). USM is huge on liberal arts so there's a huge hipster scene. That has it's ups and downs. Some of them are annoying as frick, some are good people and will show you a great time. Stay away from Edwards street. Really. Other than that you can't really go wrong finding a place to live, though I would avoid west Hattiesburg.
